Introduction: Crafting High-Quality Book Shelf Speakers: a Step-by-Step Guide

About: Hi, i like to make stuff on electronics

Greetings, fellow enthusiasts! Today, I'm thrilled to share the detailed process of creating a set of stylish shelf speakers. Despite not having a woodworking background or a fully equipped workshop, I've embarked on this challenging yet exciting journey. Join me as I walk you through each step of constructing these speakers, from building the cabinets to installing high-quality audio components.

Supplies

As i mentioned erilier i don't have any fancy woodworking tools, so i use all handheld tools.

  • Circuilar Saw
  • Wood Trimmer
  • Screw Driver
  • Soldring Iron for Soldering Wires
  • Wood Glue

Step 1: Cutting MDF

To start, gather a 25-inch long and 10-inch wide, 12 mm MDF board. Using a circular saw, cut the pieces, ensuring precision despite limited woodworking experience.

Step 2: Simplifying Things With 3D Printer

To simplify assembly, I designed these corner brackets on Tinkercad and printed them on my Bambu Lab CX1. i will help us for making in perfect Rectangular box

Step 3: Building the Cabinets

Apply an ample amount of glue on the MDF and join the pieces, securing them with custom corner brackets. Repeat this process for all the pieces. Afterward, apply some weight to it. Leave it to dry. Following that, glue the back and front panels. I use real wood for the front panel to make it more interesting.

Step 4: Speaker Selection

I'm making a 2-way speaker, so I selected Hivi Audio 4-inch full range drivers for the main driver and GRS tweeters for high frequency.

Step 5: Making Cutouts

Making cutouts was challenging for me, so I created a 3D-printed jig to guide the trimmer. I installed the custom 3D-printed jig on my trimmer and started making the cutouts. It made the process so much easier.

Step 6: Polishing and Waxing

I enhance the front panel's appeal by applying wood stain (walnut color) using a cotton fabric. Although it may not appear perfect initially, the final result will be impressive. Then i apply a black leathery finish vinyl for a polished look.

Step 7: Installing the Speakers

The cabinet is ready, and it's time to install the speakers along with passive crossover. The shelf speakers are looking good, and I'm excited to try them. Before that, we need to get an amplifier.

Step 8: Amplification and Sound Test

So, I got this amplifier, it's 50W * 2 and 100W *1. It's perfect for these speakers, and we can even attach a subwoofer with it. After setting up these speakers with amplifier, i played some songs, the sound quality is pretty good. the vocals are crisp and clear with pretty decent bass. It's so loud that I can't even hear my own voice at full volume. I'm really thrilled with how this project turned out
