Lesson Overview:

Now we're going to make a ring!

Step 1: Background

Have you ever wanted something personalized? Who doesn't want something with their name on it?! One of the great things about 3D Printing and Tinkercad is everything you make can be personalized.

Whether it be your name or a message you want to wear, we're going to get started on a quick, fun example of just what you can do.

Step 2: Creating Your Ring

Now everyone has different sized fingers. The dimensions here are just to get you started. Once we're finished, we'll go over sizing your ring just for you.

For now, let's just make a ring using these measurements.

Instructions

Because we'll be working with small details, change your Snap grid to .25mm.
Drag out a torus to the workplane and make it 20mm in diameter by 7mm tall.
Drag out a cylinder to the workplane, and size it to 15mm in diameter. The height just needs to be taller than the torus.
Select both objects and use the Align tool to center them on their X and Y axes.
Turn the cylinder into a hole and group the two objects.
Continue to the next step.

Step 3: Customizing Your Ring

Now comes the really fun part, customizing your ring. In this step, we will select and place your initials on the ring.

Instructions

Rotate your ring 90° about the X axis.
Find your initials among the Letters shapes and drag them to the workplane.
Select all three letters and center them along the Y axis.
Resize them to 3.5mm wide along the Y axis and nudge them so they are evenly spaced along the X axis. Remember, some letters are wider than others.
When you are happy with the spacing, group the letters so they are easier to move around.
Continue to the next step.

Step 4: Placing the Letters on Your Ring

Now that you've selected the letters, aligned, and sized them, we need to add them to your ring.

Instructions

Align your new group to the center of the ring along the X and Y axes, and to the upper limit on the Z Axis.
With only the letter group selected, press Ctrl-Up-Arrow until you are happy with the vertical placement of the middle letter.
Continue to the next step.

Step 5: Rotating the Letters

We need to embedded the letters along the circumference of the ring so they look natural.

Instructions

Ungroup your letters.
Rotate any letters that need it about their Y axis until the letters are roughly tangent to the ring.
Embed the remaining letters by pressing Ctrl-down-arrow
Select the ring and the letters and group them
Rotate your ring about the X axis so that it rests on the Workplane and is ready for 3D printing.
Continue to the next step.

Step 6: Sizing Your Ring!

Now it's time to measure your finger. If you have a pair of calipers, use the jaws to measure the width of your finger. Otherwise, a ruler should be fine.

Instructions

In Tinkercad, make a cylinder that has the diameter of your finger.
Put it in the middle of the ring and scale the ring, while holding down Shift and Alt, until it is about 1 to 2 mm wider than your finger.
Delete the cylinder.
Continue to the next step.

Step 7: Printing Your Ring

Your ring does have some overhangs, so make sure you enable support structure. Otherwise, it should be an easy and quick print!

Instructions

In Tinkercad, make a cylinder that has the diameter of your finger.
Put it in the middle of the ring and scale the ring, while holding down Shift and Alt, until it is about 1 to 2 mm wider than your finger.
Delete the cylinder.
