Introduction: DIY Balloon Beauty Blender

About: Synth chick for electro-rock band, Former Human Beings

Silicone and latex beauty blenders are hot items in the makeup world for many reasons. They're awesome because, unlike a sponge applicator, they don't suck up all your foundation. Instead, they do a beautiful job of blending colours on your face and keeping them put. They also don't accumulate bacteria like the sponge versions, and they are super easy to clean. Here, I'll show you how to make some out of household items. These are especially good because they conform to the shapes and crevices on your face to get awesome full coverage.

Supplies

  • mixing bowl
  • mixing stick
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon hair conditioner
  • 2 balloons, 9" or smaller
  • scissors

Step 1: Gather Your Materials

There are two ingredients that go inside the balloon: cornstarch and conditioner. You don't have to be picky about the brand or quality of these guys, but do keep in mind some conditioners are more watery than others, so you may have to play with the amounts here. This is a recipe for two beauty blenders. You can just multiply and add balloons to make more.

If you'd just like to make super soft play dough instead of a beauty blender, just use my recipe using just the cornstarch and conditioner. That's basically what you're making to put inside the balloon. :)

Step 2: Making the Shape-shifting Dough

In your bowl, add the cornstarch and hair conditioner.

Stir until well combined. It will eventually turn into a soft dough.

Pick it up and knead it with your hands until it's a soft putty.

Step 3: Fill'er Up

Split your dough in two.

Take them and drop them in the balloons. Make sure the dough is pushed down all the way.

Step 4: Tie and Snip

Use your fingers to mold the dough inside the balloon so it's a nice semi-flattened disc. Tie the balloon tightly in a knot right up against the dough.

Snip off the excess balloon right near the knot.

Repeat the process with the other balloon.

Step 5: Usage and Clean-up

Squirt a super tiny amount of your makeup or foundation onto a blender. You will notice that you only have to use the smallest amount now that a sponge isn't eating it up. Press against the face and use swiping motions to spread your product around.

Cleaning is a cinch. Simply use your favourite makeup cleaner or soap and water to remove any makeup from the blender. Easily dry off with a towel. You won't have to wait hours for this to dry as you would with a traditional makeup brush or sponge. Bye-bye, bacteria!
