Introduction: DIY Paper Nail Wraps
This idea came to me about a year ago. When I first tried it, I thought it was kinda crazy and wasn't sure if it would work. It turned out great, so I've decided to share the technique for my first instructable.
Despite being made of paper, these nail wraps are waterproof and surprisingly durable - with a little maintenance, they can last up to a week. It's a simple concept, and only requires basic materials. Even if you're as inept at nail art as I am, you can create a set of perfect nails in no time.
Step 1: Materials
For this instructable, you'll need the following:
- paper
- scissors
- clear topcoat
- a nail file
Optional:
- rhinestones or glitter topcoat
Step 2: Selecting the Paper
It's important to select the right paper for your nail wraps - it can't be too thick. Postcards, cardstock, and scrapbook paper are out of the question. Metallic papers and foils don't work well either. The best paper is slightly thinner than computer paper. I like to use magazines, paper doilies, and origami paper.
Step 3: Cutting the Paper to Fit Your Nail
Cut a rectangle slightly larger than your nail out of the paper you chose. Measure it against your nail, and trim the sides and bottom down to size. Make sure to leave approximately half an inch past the top edge of your nail.
Step 4: Attaching the Paper to Your Nail
Apply a thick layer of clear nail polish or topcoat to your nail, then position the paper wrap and press it into the polish. Hold it there for a few seconds until it starts to set. Don't worry if the polish starts to seep through the paper - that's good! The paper will adhere better to your nail.
Step 5: File Your Nail...
Once the polish has dried, fold the remaining edge of paper over the top of the nail and run the file over it, moving back and away from the nail just as you would with regular nail strips. Keep going until the paper falls away.
Voila! You're almost done with your first nail...
Step 6: Add Topcoat
Apply an even layer of topcoat over the entire nail, making sure to cover the paper completely. Add a few more coats until the paper is completely saturated with polish.
Add rhinestones and glitter if you wish, then repeat the steps with the rest of your nails!
Step 7: The Finished Product!
You're done! That was easy, wasn't it?
You can now use your nails just as you would normally - don't worry about damaging them when you wash your hands or do the dishes. If the paper starts to peel away from the nail, simply add an additional drop of polish underneath.
Now, you're all set to take on the world with your vibrant paper nails!

How long do these usually last?
Reply 7 years ago on Introduction
it depends - some types of paper last longer than others. If the polish fully saturates the paper, they're pretty hardy. You might need to do a little touch up with the clear polish to keep them from peeling though. With a little upkeep they can last up to a week.
