Introduction: Dal One Pot Veg Rice (South Indian Style)

This is a very simple rice dish which I make often at home. My whole family loves one pot meals and this is one of our favorite dish. This is a simple South Indian variety rice that can be made in less than half hour. One of my all time favorite recipes, not because it’s simple, it tastes really simple and good. This is one of the most famous dishes of Coimbatore. Serve it hot.

Step 1: Ingredients


Preparation Time : 10 minutes | Cooking Time : 15 mins | Serves : 2


Ingredients:

Rice - 1 cup

Toor Dhal - 1/4 cup + 2 tbsp

Small Onion - 10 halved

Tomato - 2 small

Garlic - 2 to 3

Water - 3 cups

Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp

Sambhar powder - 1 Tsp

Coriander leaves - 1 tbsp

Ghee - 3 tsp

Salt - to taste

Carrot - 1

To Temper:
Oil - 2 tsp

Mustard - 3/4 tsp

Jeera - 1 tsp

Red chillies - 2

Curry leaves - few

Step 2: Chop

Chop the vegetables. Chop the onions, tomato and carrot.

Step 3: Rinse

Rines rice and Toor dal , soak it for 15 mins. Set aside.

Step 4: Temper

Heat oil in a pressure cooker, add the items listed under 'to temper' allow it to crackle.

Step 5: Onions

When jeera/cumin seeds sizzle add onions, garlic and saute till slightly browned. Saute until onions turn transparent.

Step 6: Tomato

Add tomatoes and saute till raw smell leaves and is slightly mushy. Then add turmeric powder and sambar powder. Add rice and dal. Add required salt. Add the sliced carrot. Saute for 2 minutes.

Step 7: Cook

Add water and pressure cook in medium flame for 3 whistles. It can be cooked directly in the pressure cooker as I have done or you can use a rice cooker. It will take about 10 minutes to cook. If you are using the rice cooker keep checking the water content.

If using pressure cooker, after the steam is released open the cooker. Once pressure releases open drizzle ghee and give a quick stir.Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot.
