Introduction: Dangling Ombre Heart Display

Don't know what to do with a blank wall? This hanging heart display is a perfect way to add a colourful pop! It's inexpensive and pretty easy to do. The best part is that it's completely customizable, you can change up the colour palette and the shapes. I did this for Valentine's Day, but I loved it so much that I redid it in my room with different colours!

I also have a Youtube channel, where I do more DIYs:

Step 1: You Will Need...

Here's what you'll need

  • Coloured Cardstock (I used paint chip samples, and yes, I raided Home Depot)
  • Heart shaped Punch (Mine's from Michael's)
  • Fishing Wire
  • Glue Gun
  • Painter's Tape
  • Measuring Tape

Step 2: Make Some Hearts!

This is the simplest and most satisfying step. Simply use the heart punch to make ALOT of hearts. You will need quite a lot if your wall is large, so make sure you have enough cardstock! Also, this is where you decide your colour palette. I wanted my display to have an ombre effect, so I used varying shades of pink.

My display ended up with 60 hearts that were double sided, so I ultimately I used 120 hearts. This sounds overwhelming, but it actually goes by pretty fast so don't worry!

Step 3: Measure and Mark

Take out your measuring tape and measure how long you want your hearts to hang. You can do this by measuring the height of your wall or the space you're using.

Then, place the measuring tape on the floor. Put two pieces of painters tape to mark the top and bottom of this measurement. Then, repeat this step 5 times. If you see the image, it might be easier to understand. Basically, I'm marking my wall height measurement on the ground.

Step 4: Cut the Fishing Wire

Now that you have your tape markers, it'll be really easy to cut and measure the fishing wire.

Lift up the tape at the top and place the end of the fishing wire there. The fishing wire should be securely attached. Then unroll the fishing wire spool until you reach the bottom tape. Cut the fishing wire and use the bottom tape to attach the other end.

It's hard to see in the picture, but I have 5 vertical lines of fishing wire attached to the ground.

Hopefully you understand! The point of the tape is to make the measuring easy :)

Step 5: Lay Out the Hearts

Lay out the hearts to see an overall visual of how the colours will look together.

For each vertical string, I laid out 6 hearts. I also sort of shifted the hearts up or down so that they don't look like they're in a perfect grid.

Step 6: Glue the Hearts

Now all you have to do is hot glue the hearts to your fishing wire!

  1. Make a line of glue straight down the heart.
  2. Place the fishing wire on this line of glue.
  3. Once the fishing wire is attached to the heart, add dots of glue on the heart
  4. Place another heart on top, to make it double sided

Essentially, you are making a heart sandwich, with the fishing wire in between the two hearts.

Make sure that you have your second heart ready to go to add on top of the heart, or the glue will dry!

If your paper has colour on both sides, you don't need to add another heart on top

Step 7: Different View of the Glueing

It's hard to see the fishing wire, so hopefully this view will be easier to understand.

Step 8: This Is What You Should End Up With..

Here's what you should end up with after glueing the hearts. It's a line of hearts that dangle down the fishing wire.

I repeated steps 4-7 to create another set of 5. This is optional, but I just wanted my heart display to have more columns. I didn't want to do it all at once because I didn't have enough floor space.

Step 9: Hang Up the Hearts!

Finally, you can hang up your hearts. What I did was stick removable adhesive hooks to the ceiling and then I tied the string to the hook. You can also simply tape it up with scotch tape, because they are pretty light. If you are using scotch tape, make sure to remove some of the stickiness so that you don't remove any paint from your ceiling!

Step 10: Finished!

And the DIY is complete! My wall looks so much more interesting now. Hopefully, it wasn't too difficult to understand! It actually didn't take me very long to do, I just dedicated a Saturday afternoon and I was finished :) I think that this display adds such a great impact to a room, and definitely adds a unique touch. Don't forget that you can change it up depending on the colour or shape that you want to use!
