Introduction: Dehydrated Pizza Cookies: Back to the Future

You will need:

  • Sugar cookie dough
  • Red and Green food coloring
  • Aluminum foil
  • Permanent markers or a printer & paper
  • White frosting

Step 1: Sugar Cookie Dough

You can make your sugar cookie dough from scratch or buy it premade, it doesn’t really matter. I used a dry packaged mix and all I had to do was add butter and water.

Once you have your white dough, take a small amount and separate it between two bowls- I put about a quarter cup of white into each bowl.

You will be coloring the contents of one of the bowls red, and the other bowl green. I used about 7 drops of food coloring to achieve the vibrant color I wanted and used a fork to mix the food coloring into the dough.

Once you have your colored dough, put the dough into the fridge for a few minutes. This will make it easier to work with in the next steps.

Step 2: The Crust

  1. Take large spoonful of dough
  2. Roll it up into a ball
  3. Place it down into a flat surface
  4. Cover it with aluminum foil or parchment paper
  5. Squish it down using a plate or a cutting board
  6. After doing this, you should have a nice, round, piece of crust

Step 3: The Toppings

To make the pepperoni, use the same method you used when making the crust. But, use much smaller pieces of dough- a dough ball the size of a large of a large pea should make a good-sized pepperoni.

For the peppers, start out with small dough balls. Then, roll the balls out in to logs. Leave the logs on a flat surface, and use your finger to push the center of each log forward to created a curved shape.

The toppings are now ready for baking.

Step 4: Baking

Bake the cookies according to the directions for your recipe.

But, only bake the toppings for a few minutes. Try 2-3 minutes, then check on them to see if they’re done. If they’re done, take them out. If they’re not done put them in for a couple more minutes, but keep an eye on them because they’ll burn quickly if overcooked.

Step 5: Pizza!

Spread a thin layer of frosting onto the top of the cookie. The frosting will look like cheese and act as glue for the toppings. When your cookie is frosted you can add the toppings. Remember: half pepperoni, half green pepper.

Step 6: Label

The label is the trickiest part of this project. The easiest thing to do would be to print the image of the label into some silver paper or clear sticker paper and then adhere that to a foil pouch. I would recommend using either of those methods if you’re looking to same time.

What I did was create a stencil of the image and then used that stencil to color directly onto a sheet of foil using a pen and fine tip permanent markers. It took some time to color everything in, but the final product looked really nice.

To make the stencil, I used my Silhouette. I imported the image into the Silhouette software and used the trace feature to create the cut lines for the stencil. I set the blade to 6 and had the image cut out from a cheap plastic index divider (the kind you use in 3-hole binders).

Step 7: ​Packaging the Pizza

  1. Place a sheet of foil down onto a flat surface.
  2. Put a pizza cookie onto the center of the foil.
  3. Place a sheet of foil down on top of the pizza cookie.
  4. Fold the edges of the foil down to create a pouch. Start with the sides and then do the bottom and the top. If you can, fold each side twice so that the pizza cookies doesn’t escape.
