Hey guys welcome to my second instructable. Before i proceed to this instructable i would love to say that its good to share what you make you could just inspire some one out there. Use to think it was only on youtube and has to go with a video but here, one could just roll with only images. And thats what i love about this community just do what you can and the be nice policy thats what people like me need the most.

CAR TIRE PUMP KITS

Enough of the sentiments, now to the order of the day. A portable tire pump kit could be all you need to get out of a tight situation when you have a sudden flat tire or you find your friends turning up to join the party and you find the tire pressure too low for them to hitch a ride with you.this is when your portable kit comes in handy. Many people every now and then encounter problems with their tire pump kits besides failing pump hose and rubber seals, the next headache is the piston failure. Sometimes you could have eletrical faults but that rarely happens,but in all the cost of replacement either in parts or the entire unit is high. i bought mine for 5 thousand now now the cheapest is about 8 grand the local metal smith asked for 4grand to fix the broken shaft honestly that was quit heavy on my pockek.So i will show you how i fixed my broken piston joint. My pump had a fall and the piston joint with the crank came apart. I will be working on a TORNADO AIR ERUPT, (YOUR VITAL AIR SOURCE).

Step 1: Equipments

To fix this problem you dont need alot of tools basicaly just a handfull:

  • screw driver (depending on the kind of screws used)
  • Hand drill and some drill bits
  • bolt and nut
  • Allen key set

You would need some protective equipment:

  • A pair of gloves(heat resistant if you dont have a vice like me)
  • Eye googles

**********WARNING***********

Iron fillings and shrapnels can be dangerous to you.Puncture wounds can occur, protect all body orifice; eyes, ears and most especially your nostrils. Also the drilled piece gets quite hot as the drill works progress.

Step 2: Dis-assemble.

Dis-assemble the unit by unscrewing the top cylinder chamber and the piston chamber cover. On this pump it had 2 sets of 4 screws holding each section down. The piston will slide out on its own with out much working. Using my allen key set i was able to find the right size required to slack the screws of the fly wheel and pull the wheel out. The allen key would go in through the top to unscrew the screw.(see the images)

Step 3: Quick Fix

After much analysis of the problem at hand i decided to use a bolt and nut(locally we call it pass and tight in my country by the technicians). the idea was simple, the fly wheel still had what was left of the original shaft. so i decided to pass a small screw through the shaft and use it to fasten the piston rod back. Rummaging through my drill box i found the right drill for this occasion. Starting out with a small bit i drilled through what was left of the flywheel shaft. In my case it was just enough to support the quick fix. After the first run through i continued swapping bits till i got to the last bit i wanted to use for this repair (the drill bit and my bolt had disame diameter so as to get a snug fit).

Step 4: ASSEMBLY

Having gotten to the final diameter i wanted, it was time to assemble the unit back. By passing the bolt though placing the piston connecting rod on the fly wheel shaft, i bolted all down together.

N/P: DEPENDING ON THE BREADTH OF YOUR FLY WHEEL AND PISTON ROD ASSEMBLY YOU CAN ADJUST THE BOLT BY CUTTING IT TO GET THE ACTUAL LENGTH YOU NEED.

Now comes the little hard part of manoeuvring the entire assembly into position in the housing of the pump, Actually the piston head goes in from the front then the fly wheel follows suit. The allen key will be inserted through the top beside the piston to fasten the flywheel to the rotor shaft.

Step 5: TESTING

I must confess the repair turned out fine. the pump, pumped my car tires just like good old times. The reading is at 42 kpa.
