Braiding is an ancient technique that involves intertwining multiple strands of material, such as threads, fibers, or in this case, leather, to create a structured and intertwined pattern. Not only does it serve a functional purpose by enhancing the strength and flexibility of materials - it also allows for intricate and decorative patterns that can be adapted to various crafts, from textiles to jewelry-making.

Among those materials, leather could be considered one of the most suitable materials. Its ability to age gracefully, developing a rich patina over time makes it perfect for making stunning braided bracelets, that embody both artistry and durability.

So, in this Instructable, I'm going to show you how to make this super simple braided leather bracelet.

Supplies

8 feet of 3mm x 0.5 mm leather string

Magnetic bracelet clasp

Superglue

Thread

Two-part epoxy

Sharp scissors

Step 1: Watch the Video

I made a short video about the project, so that you can see the process of braiding in action.

Step 2: Cut the Strands to Size

The length of the leather strands needed will of course depend on the diameter of the bracelet, but also the cross-section of your leather cord.

As always, it's safer to leave a bit of an extra, than to cut a strand too short. So, for a problem-free crafting experience, cut four leather strands, each 2 feet in length.

Step 3: Divide the Strands

Locate the center of one of the strands, and tie a simple knot. Then, pass the second strand through the knot, before tightening the knot. That should leave you with four equal strands, each about a foot in length, all connected from one side.

Step 4: The Braiding Technique

The braiding process is very simple:

First, cross two strands like in the first picture.

Then, take the strand from the rightmost side. Pass it left, behind two of the strands. Then bring it to the front, and fold it right. Make sure there are no unwanted knots formed due to the flat nature of the strand.

Next, do the same thing for the leftmost strand.

Keep repeating the last two steps, until you run out of stands.

Finally, make a second cord exactly the same way.

Step 5: Smoothing the Leather Cords

The braided cords are textured and uneven at first. To smoothen them, roll them on a table while applying firm pressure.

Step 6: Glue the Ends

To avoid the braids from becoming undone, add a few of drops of superglue to hold the ends of the cords together.

Step 7: First Cuts

Use a sharp pair of scissors to cut one end of each cord neatly.

Step 8: The Thread

Tie a few inches of thread around the ends of the cords, to make them stronger, and give the glue something to hold onto in the next step

Step 9: The Clasp

Using two-part epoxy, glue the two cords into a hollow magnetic clasp.

Ps: As I didn't have any epoxy in stock, I used superglue and B-7000, and it also worked fine.

Step 10: Cut the Bracelet to Size

Wrap the two cords around your hand with the clasp attached, to mark the length of the cords needed.

Cut the cords, and epoxy the second part of the magnetic clasp to the other end of the cords.

Step 11: Done!

And just like that, you now have a custom-made leather bracelet!

It's a also nice gift idea, as Its handmade nature will showcase the time, effort, and attention devoted to its creation.

Different colors, textures, and thicknesses of leather will also give you different results. If you're in search of a more colorful bracelet, you can even use different colored strands for making a single cord.
