Introduction: Dough Rising Box - DIY for Cheap

Bread or Cake Dough rising box

Some doughs need long rising times and stable temperature. Therefore you need a controlled environment. All the products available are bulky and expensive.

You can build you own inexpensive dough rising box with just a few things and almost no tools.

Supplies

  • Styrofoam Box (~10€)
  • Aquarium Heater 25W (temperature adjustable ) (~ 20 €)
  • Big Glas jar or pot
  • Thermometer (~15 €), preferably a remote readable (so you don't have to open the box to control the temperature, like Xiaomi Mi Temperature and Humidity Monitor 2)

The aquarium heater has to be adjustable in temperature. As you will need to adjust it depending on your room temperature, target temperature and styro box.

In our case, we set the aquarium heater to 32°C in order to have a stable 27°C in box environment or (31°C to get 26°C)

Use a remote thermometer so you do not need to open the Box to check the temperature. Maybe you have already one for your house and outdoor temp or buy a inexpensive one. In your case we use a Xiaomi with Bluetooth.

Step 1: Setup the Styro Box

  1. Make sure that your jar or pot is big enough to submerge the aquarium heater.
  2. Fill the Jar with water (ideally preheated to the target temperature, i.e 32°C)
  3. Set the temperature on the aquarium heater i.e 32 °C
  4. Submerge the heater in the water
  5. Close the jar with plastic wrap and seel it with a rubber band so the water does not evaporate into the styro box
  6. Place the Styro Box where no sun shines on it (stable room temperature)
  7. Place the jat with the heater into the Box
  8. Plug in your aquarium heater
  9. put the Thermometer into the Box (not directly on to the floor)
  10. Close the Styro lid
  11. Done

You will need to give it a little time to stabilize the in box temperature. It will depend on your environment. In your case we set the aquarium temperature to 32°C to have a stable 27°C in rising temperature.

Step 2: Use It

After setup you just need to stabilize the temperature and then place the dough inside.

Check the actual temperature during the rise time to make sure its stable.
