Introduction: Dragon Origami/ Kirigami

Today you will learn how to make this dragon origami piece!

Supplies

One sheet of square (preferably origami) paper

Scissors

Step 1: Square Base: Pre-Folds

***ATTENTION***

IF YOU KNOW HOW TO FOLD A SQUARE BASE YOU MAY SKIP TO STEP 4

***ATTENTION***

Fold a diagonal mountain fold and two horizontal valley folds, each covering half of the sheet of paper.

Step 2: Square Base: Folding Pt. 1

Pull one corner on the end of the diagonal fold up and onto it's neighbor. Do not crease.

Step 3: Square Base: Folding Pt. 2

Fold part of the side back, as shown, so there is a crease from the corner to the middle.

Step 4: Square Base: Folding Pt. 3

Fold the other corner into the same corner in the same fashion. As before, do not crease yet.

Step 5: Square Base: Finishing

Squash down the fold into the square shape shown.

Step 6: Dragon Base: Prefolds Pt. 1

Fold the corners in and out as shown, with the square base in the same orientation.

Step 7: Dragon Base: Prefolds Pt. 2

Repeat on the other side, so that the square base looks as shown.

Step 8: Dragon Base: Folding Pt. 1

Open up the side of the square base by holding a corner and pulling it out.

Step 9: Dragon Base: Folding Pt. 2

Using the prefolds, fold in the side of the opening.

Step 10: Dragon Base: Folding Pt. 3

Repeat on the other side.

Step 11: Dragon Base: Folding Pt. 4

Fold the new triangle shape into the square base.

Fold the triangle slightly inwards and squash it shut.

Repeat on the other side

Step 14: Dragon Details: Wings - Prefolds

Prefold as shown. The angles of the folds are up to you.

Step 15: Dragon Details: Wings - Folds Pt. 1

Pinch the two sides together using the prefolds, and push the triangular shape to one side. (In this case, left.)

Step 16: Dragon Details: Wings - Folds Pt. 2

Repeat on the other side, with the wings going in the same direction.

Step 17: Dragon Details: Tail - Folds Pt. 1

Push the tail down with an inside reverse fold.

Step 18: Dragon Details: Tail - Folds Pt. 2

Fold up the tip of the tail in an inside reverse fold.

Step 19: Dragon Details: Head - Folds Pt. 1

Push the head to the opposite direction of the wings (in this case, right) and flatten.

Step 20: Dragon Details: Head - Folds Pt. 2

Fold the head out in an inside reverse fold.

Step 21: Dragon Details: Head - Folds Pt. 3

Square off the head by folding the tip in with an inside reverse fold.

Step 22: Dragon Details: Legs - Cuts

Cut along the up-and-down lines of the bottom of the dragon, separating it into four right triangle shapes.

Step 23: Dragon Details: Legs - Folds Pt. 1

Fold up one of the triangles fully.

Step 24: Dragon Details: Legs - Folds Pt. 2

Fold the triangle down so that the farthest side from the cut is parallel with the cut.

Step 25: Dragon Details: Legs - Folds Pt. 3

Lift up the pocket and move it toward the cut. Press down to complete the leg.

Step 26: Dragon Details: Legs - Folds Pt. 3

Repeat with all other legs.

Step 27: Finished!

You are finished! The dragon can stand on its four legs, or you can display it flat.
