Introduction: Easy Practical and Fashionable Dog Socks

My dog recently hurt her paws on the hot summer pavement. I tried looking into some dog shoes, but the reviews were not great. We keep old socks around for crafts and cleaning so I thought that using them would help protect her paws around the house. I tried just slipping the sock onto her feet but they would not stay on. So I set out to make socks for my dog that were by far the cheapest and easiest.

Supplies

Scissors

1-4 socks (depending on your dog's paws condition) I used Medium/Large kids socks for my 50 LB dog, so give or take based on the size of your dog. (I found that socks with a thin elastic band work best)

Scissors (sharp)

Dog

Hot glue (optional)

Bag Balm or lotion (optional)

Step 1: Find Sock

Acquire sock. As I mentioned before, I had old socks on hand but if you do not you could go and buy a pair. Socks like the one pictured above work best (small elastic bands are easier to tie)

Step 2: Cut Half of Top

Cut as shown. Make sure to not cut on the side with a heel.

Step 3: Cut the Band in Half

Fold the sock in half and cut the elastic band on the fold. (See Photos)

Step 4: Acquire Biscuits

Step 5: Moisturize Paws (Optional)

I put some balm on her paws because the socks prevent her from licking it and getting it all over the floor.

Step 6: Tie On

With the ties facing out, Distract dogs with biscuits and gently slip their paws into the sock. Loosely double-knot the sock so it is secure but not hurting your dog.

Step 7: Add Hot Glue Grips (optional)

If you have wood stairs or mostly wooden floors and are concerned about your dog slipping, simply add a few dots, squiggles, or lines of hot glue on the bottom. I did not find this necessary but it could help.

Step 8: Done!

Monitor your dog with he/she uses the socks. Take them off to go on any outdoor terrain or when your dog is left unattended.
