I did this project in DDP (Designing and Drawing for Production) class by using different types of strips of wood to make a cutting board.

Step 1: Find 2-3 Different Types of Hardwood.

I used Popular and Red Oak for my Cutting Board. It has to be hardwood so while cutting on the board, the knife does not cuts through. Other kind of wood that can be used is Black walnut.

Step 2: Cut Wood Strips

In this step, the wood has to be cut into strips using a Table Saw. My strips were three quarters of an inch wide and 1.25 inch deep. After cutting them, I assembled it into the pattern I liked. I used four popular strips and four red oak strips which gave me almost a 8.5 inch wide cutting board.

Step 3: Glue the Strips Using Clamps

After assembling the strips into a pattern, glue the strips using wood glue and clamps. Make sure you tight the clamps so the strips stay together. After gluing my board on the clamps, it looked like the picture above.

Step 4: Plane and X-Carve

After the glue has dried, unclamp the board and use Planer to plane both sides of the board. After that use the X-carve to perfectly smooth both sides of the cutting board. The planer is shown in the picture above.

Step 5: Cut the Sides on the Table Saw.

Cut the sides of the board to make the the sides even. Use a Table Saw.

Step 6: Radius Corners and Trim Them

After you board is smooth, use a round cap to radius the corners of the cutting board. This can be done by having a board on the front and putting the cap on the corners. Then mark the corners with a pencil. After all of the corners are marked, then use the Band Saw to trim the corners in a straight line.

Step 7: Use the Belt Sander

Use a Large Belt Sander to sand and round the corners of the board.

Step 8: Route the Sides and Edges of the Board

Using the half inch round-over bit on the router, route the sides and edges of the board. I routed both sides as shown in the picture above.

Step 9: Finish Sanding

Use a hand sander with paper, P240 to sand the front, back, sides and corners of the board. The sand paper can also be used to sand the edges evenly.

Step 10: Laser Engrave a Picture to Personalize (optional)

Using a laser engraver, I carved a clip art of the camera on the side of the board to personalize it. This is a good option if the board is a gift for someone. My board and the laser engraver is shown above.

Step 11: Oil the Board With Cutting Board Oil

Using the mineral oil, put at least two coats of the oil on the board. The oil also enhances the color and texture of the Cutting Board. The oil is used because it is food safe. Things like Polyurethane should not be used because it is not food safe however, if you don't want to use it as a Cutting Board, then you can use Polyurethane.
