Introduction: Fire Baked Blackberry Apples

Spiral apples are a great way to get kids to eat more fruit, ours can't seem to resist them! By adding some blackberries, sugar and cinnamon you can turn them into a yummy fireside treat.

Step 1: Ingredients / Tools

Ingredients

  • Apples
  • Blackberries (or any other berries, whatever you like!)
  • Butter
  • Brown sugar
  • Cinnamon

Tools

  • Apple peeler/corer/slicer
  • Tin foil

Step 2: Spiralize the Apple

Use the slicer to cut the apple. I like to leave the skin on but you could cut that off now as well.

As an alternative to the slicer, use a sharp knife to cut the apple into thin slices. You will also need to cut the core out.

Step 3: Fill the Apple

Add about a 3/4 teaspoon of cinnamon to a tablespoon of brown sugar. How much cinnamon is a personal choice, about 3/4 of a teaspoon seems to suit most people.

Mix until combined.

Open the apple up and sprinkle the sugar/cinnamon mix between each layer.

Stand the apple up and push the blackberries and butter down into the hole where the core was. I use only a small amount of butter and it could be left out although the apple doesn't seem to cook quite as well without it.

Make sure you completely fill the apple.

Step 4:

Place the apple on a square of tin foil.

Fold the foil in and wrap the apple up.

Get the foil as tight as you can to keep all juice and hot air in.

Step 5: Cook

Place the wrapped apples on a medium grill. I used a propane grill in this instance due to current fire restrictions. If using a wood fire try to keep the apples just off the coals to prevent them burning.

Cook for approx 20 minutes or until soft.

Step 6: Serve

Remove the apply from the foil and enjoy!

Goes great with a little ice cream, whipped cream, maple syrup, custard.........
