Introduction: Fried Rice for Hungry College Students

Fried rice is a classic Chinese dish, with many different variation depending on the region. Of course, it is a staple of many a quick and easy college meal. The main ingredient, rice, is cheap and easy to cook, and you can add in almost any meat or vegetable sitting around in your fridge. It's so easy to make in large batches, that I often make enough for 3-4 meals in one go - perfect for when exam season rolls around!

Step 1: Ingredients

What ingredients to use for fried rice vary widely - the version I am writing up here is the ultimate budget meal - incredibly cheap, but tasty and complete with eggs, bacon, and frozen veggies for your daily nutrition needs :)

Must-have Ingredients

  • Cooked rice
  • Green Onion
  • 1-2 Eggs
  • Salt and Pepper
  • Light Soy Sauce

Optional/Varied

  • 1 bag of frozen chopped veggies
  • 1/2 bag of bacon

Step 2: Mise En Place

Prep the ingredients

  1. Scramble the eggs
  2. Cook the back and chop into small pieces
  3. Chop the green onion
  4. Defrost bag of frozen veggies

Step 3: Combine the Ingredients

Turn a pan onto medium-high heat and add in a couple spoons of cooking oil. When it starts to heat up, add in some of your chopped green onion - this helps enhance the flavor of the rice. Finally, add the remaining ingredients into the pan and stir fry!

Step 4: Fry the Rice

Now that all the ingredients are in one place, start to stir fry!

I recommend starting with adding 1 teaspoon of salt, a sprinkle of pepper, and a couple of table spoons of soy sauce to the ingredients in the pan, and then continuing to adjust the amounts as the rice continues cooking.

Stir fry for approximately 7-8 minutes, and enjoy by itself, or with added sauces (I have friends who add in chili sauce, or even ketchup!)

Thank you! I love rice meals! Right now I use pre-made frozen rice mixes with veggies and mushrooms - easy to cook. But it's not exactly budget-friendly, so I thought I could make my own fried rice. The bacon makes this dish not quite frugal, but I think it would be delicious without it. I'm going to try making it today!

No butter? Is that why it came out white instead of the usual light brown of fried rice?

And may I ask, what's with the sugar?

To satisfy my sweet cravings :D

It's optional but I usually add half a teaspoon or so.
