During the waning days of summer, the anticipation of September newness is tangled up in the nostalgia for more summer. This inexpensive recipe for sink and tub scrub is great way to channel antsy energies while preserving the last of the summer lavender.

The non-toxic ingredients are actually more effective in removing tough stains than most store-bought products, without the harsh chemicals. Tea tree oil has anti-fungal, antibacterial, and antiviral properties, so there’s the added benefit of working as a germ reducer during the winter flu season.

A little sprinkle of this homemade scrub in your bathroom sink in frigid January will be a sweet reminder of summers yet to come.

Step 1: Ingredients

  • 3 cups of baking soda
  • 20 drops of lavender and tea tree oils
  • 1-2 stems of lavender (fresh or dried, home-grown or borrowed)
  • 1 quart-sized mason jar or other air tight container

Step 2: Directions

Mix baking soda and essential oils in a large bowl until thoroughly combined, then clip small ½ inch sprigs of lavender over the bowl and gently mix together. Keep the ingredients in a quart-sized mason jar or other closed container.

Sprinkle on a dry surface and using a damp cloth, scrub gently. Stains are lifted without much pressure, leaving the surface bright white and smelling fresh.

Step 3: Extra Credit

Random acts of kindness are instant mood-lifters! Make an extra batch and divide in pint-sized mason jars to share with friends and neighbors. Add a fresh sprig on top before closing the lid, label with a list of ingredients, and tie with packing twine.
