Introduction: Glass Pi Pie Plates

About: The world is full of anger and ugliness. We can all make the world more beautiful by being kinder to our neighbors but also by making. We can make things to beautify our small personal worlds, we can make thin…

These beautiful glass pi pie plates are perfect to celebrate Pi day on March 14 (3/14) or any other day.

Please read all instructions before beginning this project.

Step 1: Gather Your Materials and Tools

For this project you will need:

  • Glass Plates
  • DecoArt Glossy Enamel Paints in Tuscan Red, Bright Orange, Bright Yellow, Festive Green, True Blue, Lavender and Shimmering Silver
  • Vinyl Pi stencil stickers with transfer tape on top (Don't forget to reverse your symbol if you're making your own sticker)
  • Foam brushes
  • Paper plates to hold paints
  • An oven
  • X-acto knife or razor blade
  • Dish soap
  • Rubbing alcohol

Step 2: Clean Your Glass Plates

Wash your plates with soap and rinse well with warm water.

After drying your plates, wipe down the back of the plate with rubbing alcohol.

Step 3: Place Your Sticker

Carefully place your sticker on the BOTTOM side of the plate.

All painting will be done on the bottom side of the plate. This is the side that you do NOT eat on. This paint is NOT food safe. It will be dishwasher safe after baking.

Step 4: Remove Transfer Tape

Carefully peel off your transfer tape while leaving the sticker in place.

Rub your sticker on firmly.

If you have any bubbles in the middle of the sticker, do not worry about them. If you have bubbles on the edges of the sticker, carefully rub them down. Do not tear or poke holes in your sticker to remove bubbles.

Step 5: Apply Paint

Apply paint to the BACK side of your plate.

This is the side that you put the sticker on.

Start in the top right corner of your pi symbol with red paint.

Add stripes of paint in this order:

  1. Red
  2. Orange
  3. Yellow
  4. Green
  5. Blue
  6. Purple

Step 6: Remove Sticker

Carefully and slowly remove your sticker.

It is very important to remove your sticker before your paint dries!

If you have a hard time getting the sticker up, careful slide the tip of your X-acto knife or edge of your razor blade under an outside edge.

Step 7: Add Silver Paint

After your rainbow pi has completely dried to the touch add silver paint.

Gently dab a thin coat of silver paint on.

Let your first coat dry then add a second light coat of silver paint.

After the paint has dried, flip your plate over and gently use your X-acto knife or razor blade to scrape any paint off the top surface.

Step 8: Bake Your Plates

Let your paint fully dry and cure for 4 days. Make sure the painted side is facing up during this time period.

Place your plates in a cold oven. Make sure the painted side is facing up!

Set your oven to 325 degrees F.

After your oven reaches full temperature bake your plates for an additional 30 minutes.

Turn your oven off. Open the oven door. Allow your plates to cool slowly in your oven.

Step 9: Enjoy Using Your Pi Pie Plates!

Please wash your plates before their first use.
