Introduction: Great Gran's Tan Slice - a Delicable Sweet Treat!
Tan slice brings back memories of visiting my wife's family farm. There was nearly always fresh slices in the cupboard waiting to feed the hungry workers and sustain them for the day! I am sure that they never noticed a few go missing here and there...
This sweet slice only gets better with the more topping that you add. Be warned though, you won't find this recipe in any weight loss guide!
Step 1: Ingredients
- 180 gm butter
- 6 Tbsp sugar
- 2 1/2 cup flour
- splash of vanilla essence
- 1 tin sweetened condensed milk
- 2 Tbsp butter
- 1 Tbsp golden syrup
Golden syrup is not that common in Northen America. You can often get Lyles syrup in the international isle of the supermarket or alternatively, the site at this link gives directions for making your own. I haven't tried this yet as have brought enough tins from New Zealand to last a little while...
Step 2: Topping
- Double pot the condensed milk, butter and golden syrup.
- The mix should get warm enough for the butter to melt and allow the three ingredients to mix together. Mix until you have a smooth consistency.
- Remove from the heat once mixed and set aside to cool. Note - don't let it cool off to much otherwise it will be difficult to pour over the base!
Note: If you prefer a more caramel filling you can heat the mix more and for longer!
Step 3: Base
- Cream the butter and sugar.
- Add the flour and vanilla. Mix until combined.
- Pack approx 3/4 of the mix into a greased and lined baking tray. The tray I used was 22cm square and resulted in a nice thickness.
- Press down to form a firm base.
- Pour the topping over the base and smooth out so that it is evenly covered.
- Crumble the remaining base mixture over the topping.
Note: Lining the baking tray helps immeasurably with getting the slice out - the caramel gets very sticky!
Step 4: Bake and Enjoy!
Bake at 350 farenheit for about 20 minutes or until golden brown. The key is to have the condensed milk turn to a toffee type consistency on the edges.
This slice is best enjoyed with a cup of tea, or a cup of coffee, or a glass of water, or nothing.... Who am I kidding, it is great with everything! The only issue is that one piece is never enough...
