Introduction: HOW DIFFERENT DRINKS AFFECT OUR TEETH

This experiment is testing eggs shells in different drinks to help us realise which drinks affect our teeth the most. I am using eggs because the egg shell is made of Calcium and it is the closest material to teeth enamel.

This is the video link in case it didn't work. https://youtu.be/eFN8o6yNOdo

Step 1: THE PURPOSE

The purpose is to help us realise which drinks are healthier for our teeth. This experiment will also help us understand how hard it is to maintain and clean our teeth after consuming these drinks.

Step 2: HYPOTHESIS

I think the eggshell exposed to Coca Cola will be in the worst condition. Then, I think the egg shell in apple juice will be the second worst. After that, I think the milk will be in the third worse condition. Then, the sparkling water will be the second best. Finally, I think the water will be the best because it is softer on your teeth's enamel. This will show what drinks you should and should not drink and how it will affect your teeth.

Step 3: VARIABLES

1-Different types of eggs.

2- Different types of drinks.

3- Different toothpaste

Step 4: BACKGROUND RESEARCH

Step 5: MATERIALS

5 JARS

5 RAW EGGS IN THE SHELL

WATER

SPARKLING WATER

MILK

COCA COLA

APPLE JUICE

TOOTHPASTE

Step 6: PROCEDURE

1- Put 1 egg in each jar.

2- Fill each jar with a different drink with the egg inside.

3- Close the jar.

4- Wait for 24 hours minimum.

5- Remove each egg carefully.

6- Compare the eggs and their Color.

7- Clean each egg with toothpaste.

8- Compare which egg was easier to clean.

Step 7: DATA

I removed the eggs from their solution after 48 hours.

I noticed the following:

Coca Cola: The egg shell in the drink was stained and had a brown color and when I brushed it was cleaned but not completely.

Apple Juice: The egg shell was stained with a brown color but was easier to clean than the Coca Cola.

Milk: The egg shell had plaque on it but the plaque was easily removed after I brushed it.

Sparkling Water: The egg was not affected and the CO2 did not react with the calcium in the egg shell so there was no need to brush.

Water: The egg shell did not change so there was no need to brush.

Step 8: DATA ANALYSIS

Water and sparkling water: had no affect on the eggshell, therefore they do not affect our teeth. No color change was seen. No reaction with the calcium in the eggshell.

The Coca Cola: There were brown stains on the eggshell. I tried to clean it using toothpaste the stain was partially removed and the egg did not go back to its original color.

The apple juice: There were brown stains and a thick layer on the eggshell. I tried to clean it using toothpaste the stain was partially removed and the egg did not go back to its original color.

The milk: It was covered with a thick white layer which did not change the color of the eggshell and was easy to remove.

Step 9: RESULTS

The water and sparkling water had no affect on the egg shell, therefore they do not affect our teeth.

The Coca Cola will change the color of our teeth, and keep a permanent stain.

The apple juice will also change the color of our teeth and cause a permanent stain, but it is easier to clean compared to the coca cola.

The milk causes plaque and minimum change of color in our teeth.

Step 10: CONCLUSION

You should not drink a lot of juice and soft drinks in order to keep your teeth clean and healthy. Otherwise if you do you should brush your teeth immediately after these drinks to prevent any change of color to your teeth enamel.

Milk causes a residue to remain on your teeth which can become plaque. You should brush your teeth immediately after you drink it to prevent plaque from accumulating and getting hard.

With regards to water and sparkling water they are the softest solutions on your teeth.

Step 11: APPLICATION AND IMPORTANCE

I think this scientific experiment shows you how important your teeth are and that you have to realise which drinks will really affect your teeth in a bad way and the ways to clean it.

Step 12: EVALUATION

RESEARCH SKILLS: I researched on how your teeth function and know which drinks are good and bad for you.

SELF MANAGEMENT: I managed my time and gave enough days to be able to put the eggs in drinks and then measure the data.

THINKING: I needed to think on which drinks I should use to make this experiment a successful one and change your opinion on some drinks.

COMMUNICATION: I made sure my video was coherent with editing and communicating with communication skills in my video.
