Introduction: Halloween Baked Apples

About: My name is Britt Michelsen. I am a chemical engineer from Germany especially interested in computational fluid dynamics. To balance all the theoretical work, I like to make stuff in my free time

Baked apples are one of my most favourite things to eat. They remind me of Christmas and spending time together with my family. So I don't see why I shouldn't start eating them earlier.
To be honest I always thought they looked kind of gross so I figured that they would be the perfect Halloween dessert.
I remember this Instructable, on how to make jello worms and decided that they would go perfectly with the apples. As you can see in the picture, my friends approved.

If you are not a big fan of marzipan, try one of these recipies. Either with amaretto or dried fruits.

Step 1: Ingredients

For the worms:
  • 4 g Agar Agar powder (e.g. on
  • 6 tbsp. wild berry jelly
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) whipping cream
  • 80 Straws

For the baked apples (per apple)
  • Apple
  • 50 g marzipan
  • 8 g chopped hazelnuts
  • 10 g chopped almonds
  • 1 tbsp. wild berry jelly
  • 1 tsp. butter
  • Chocolate Creme Oreo Cookie

Step 2: Make the Worms

I tried making the original recipe, but failed miserably. Getting the worms out of the straws turned out to be extremely difficult and after holding them under warm water, they turned into a huge mess.

So I decided to experiment a bit and ended up with this recipe:

Start by pulling the straws to extend them to their full length and use the Oreo container to place them in. Remember to face them with the bendable end at the bottom. If they don't fill up the whole container use aluminium foil to hold them in place.

Dissolve 4 g of Agar Agar in 1.5 cups (375 ml) of boiling water. Add 6 tbsp. of wild berry jelly and let the mixture cook for at least two minutes. Don't worry the fishy smell will vanish. Remove the mixture from the heat and add 1/4 cup (60 ml) of whipping cream.

Wait until it stops steaming and carefully pour the mixtures into the straws.

Let them set in a cold place for at least two hours.

Step 3: Prepare the Apples

Remove the pit from the apples and carve a hole of about 2 cm in diameter into them.

Cut the marzipan into small cubes and mix it with the chopped hazelnuts and almonds. Fill the apples with the mixture and top them of with a tbsp. of wild berry jelly and a tsp. of butter, as shown in the pictures.

Bake them in the oven for about 25 minutes at 170°C (338°F).

Step 4: Decoration

Crumble the oreos and place the baked apple in the middle. Simply press the "worms" out of the straws to decorate the plate with them (as shown in the animation below).

If you want you can serve them with vanilla sauce.
