Introduction: Hanging Shelf With Hidden Storage, Hooks, and Motion Activated Lights

I made a hanging shelf with hooks to act as a place to hang things near my front door. I added the lights with a motion sensor so that when I approached the lights would turn on and I could see around the shelf. You can also remove the front for hidden storage for things that you want out of sight.

Supplies

o  Three 1/2x6x3’ boards

o  One 1/2x4x3’ board

o  Three single hooks

o  One box of 1-1/4” nails

o  One bottle of wood glue

o  One battery powered motion activated LED light strip

Optional

  • Spray paint or wood stain

Step 1: Measure and Cut the Wood

Measure and cut the following pieces using the hand saw and measuring tape

(important note: the actual dimensions of the 4” and 6” wide boards are 3 ½” and 5 ½”)

Step 2: Glue the Main Shelf Together

Glue four of the the ½ x 5 ½ x 2 ½ pieces between two of the ½ x 5 ½ x 2’ pieces and clamp together as shown below

o  Glue along all contact points of the wood and clamp where the red clamps are shown

o  Leave the clamps on and let the glue dry for 12 hours

Step 3: Nail the Main Shelf Where It Was Glued for Extra Strength

Grab 16 nails and nail two evenly along each surface that was glued

Step 4: Glue the Back of the Shelf to the Main Shelf

Glue the remaining ½ x 5 ½ x 2’ piece to the back of the main shelf

o  Glue along all contact points of the wood and clamp where the red clamps are shown

o  Leave the clamps on and let the glue dry for 12 hours

Step 5: Nail the Back of the Shelf to the Main Shelf for Extra Strength

Grab 8 nails and nail them evenly spaced along the pieces that were glued

Step 6: Glue the Front of the Shelf Together

Glue the remaining two ½ x 5 ½ x 2 ½ pieces to the ½ x 3 ½ x 2’ piece as shown below

o  Glue along all contact points of the wood and clamp where the red clamps are shown

o  Glue the two ½ x 5 ½ x 2 ½ pieces ½” from the left and right edges respectively and centered vertically

o  Leave the clamps on and let the glue dry for 12 hours

Step 7: Screw in the Hooks to the Shelf

Using the screwdriver, screw in the three hooks on the lip below the shelf with 6” between the hooks and the edges as seen below

Step 8: Attach the Lights to the Back of the Shelf

·      Use the provided sticky pad to adhere the motion sensor underneath the shelf

·      Peel off the paper covering the sticky side on the back of the lights and stick them along the outside edges of the back of the shelf as shown below

Step 9: Paint or Stain the Wood (optional)

Grab your chosen paint or stain and head outside to paint the whole shelf

o  I personally taped around the lights and the motion sensor before painting
