Introduction: Harry Potter Chocolate Frogs -- Two Ways

About: I'm a professional writer and an amateur sewist, builder, hot gluer, dremel user, crocheter, painter, paper crafter, and baker.

Like most people, I love Harry Potter. I read the first four books in middle school and then finished off the series when I was in my early-20s. And, of course, the movies are superb. One easy way to immerse yourself in the Harry Potter world (without buying a ticket to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter) is to make some of the food featured in the books and films -- and these yummy desserts inspired by Honeyduke's Chocolate Frogs seem to do the trick pretty well.

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies

To make eight raspberry cream chocolate frogs, you'll need:

  • 1 1/2 bars of chocolate
  • 10 raspberries
  • 4 tbsp coconut cream (from a can of full-fat coconut milk)
  • 2 tsp powdered sugar

To make eight peanut butter chocolate frogs, you'll need:

  • 1 1/2 bars of chocolate
  • 1/3 peanut butter (plus more, if needed)
  • 1/4 powdered sugar

You'll also need a chocolate frog mold (I got mine from Amazon), something with which to stir chocolate, a cheap, un-used paintbrush, and a microwave safe container.

Step 2: Melt the Chocolate

Melt 1/2 of a bar of chocolate in your microwave in 30 second intervals, stirring in between. Make sure you're using a microwavable container. If you would rather, you can melt the chocolate in a double boiler on your stove.

Step 3: Pour Chocolate Into Mold

Pour a tablespoon of melted chocolate into each frog mold. Use a clean, un-used paintbrush (a cheap one works just fine) to make sure chocolate gets into all the nooks and crannies and up the sides of the mold. Place the mold in the freezer for five minutes while you whip up the filling.

Step 4: Filling Option 1: Raspberry Cream

Open up a can of full-fat coconut milk and spoon 4 tablespoons of the coconut cream that has risen to the top into a bowl. Mix together the cream with the raspberries and the sugar with a hand mixer. Take your frog mold out of the freezer and spoon a tablespoon of the raspberry cream mixture into each chocolate frog shell. Place back into the freezer while you melt more chocolate.

Step 5: Filling Option 2: Peanut Butter

For a filling similar to Reese's peanut butter cups, mix together 1/4 cup of powdered sugar and 1/3 cup peanut butter in a bowl until it resembles the second photo above. Roll a ball of the peanut butter mixture (about a tablespoon's worth) in your palms and form it into a log shape. Press the peanut butter into the frog mold. Place back into the freezer while you melt more chocolate.

Step 6: Top Off With Chocolate

Melt approximately one bar of chocolate in the microwave in 30-second increments (or in a double boiler, your choice) and pour about a tablespoon and a half over whatever inside mixture you've been working with. Place the mold back in the freezer for about ten minutes.

Step 7: Remove From the Freezer

The chocolate frogs should come right out the the mold when you turn it over, but if they don't, tap the bottom slightly until they do.

Step 8: Finished!

These chocolate frogs are a great dessert for a Harry Potter themed party or a Halloween shindig. Each version is quite sweet, but the perfect treat in moderation. The frogs would look great in handmade paper frog boxes like these ones.
