Introduction: Heated Beanie Hat That Can Also Charge Your Phone
This instructable will teach you how to make an awesome beanie hat that uses a heated pad to warm your head in cold weather and has a hidden cord that can come out and charge your phone.
Step 1: Gather Supplies
Here are the supplies you'll need with links attached:
- Beanie
- Hand warmer (you need to use this specific "mouse hand warmer" for the project to work)
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun (low or high temp)
Step 2: Cutting Out the Heated Pad
1. Unpackage the hand warmer and unplug the power cable from its connection point on the warmer.
2. Cut off the bottom of the hand warmer so only the top part containing the pad remains.
3. Trim away the excess material surrounding the pad but make sure to leave a half-inch of fabric on all sides of the pad for sewing it onto the hat.
Step 3: Attaching the Heated Pad - Part One
1. Holding the beanie upside down, fold the rim of the hat down until the inside of the hat forms a bowl shape and the hat can be laid flat on the table.
2. Put the pad into the inside of the now bowl-shaped hat so it covers the interior walls of the bowl. Make sure it is symmetrically placed, so the pad is positioned in the center of the hat.
Step 4: Attaching the Heated Pad - Part Two
1. Cut out a six-foot-long piece of durable sewing thread.
2. Pull the thread through the needle up to the halfway point so that every stitch will end up with 2 strings, making it twice as strong.
3. Sew the edges of the heated pad to the rim of the hat bowl.
Step 5: Trimming the Pad's Rough Edges and Making a Cable Hole
1. Trim the rough edges of the pad about 1/3 of an inch away from the stitches to make the edges smooth so the hat looks more professional.
2. Unfold the hat so it is the right way out and use scissors to cut a small hole below where the cable comes out of the pad. Be sure the hole is behind the hat's rim flap so that it's out of sight.
3. Push the cable connected to the heated pad (the connection point) out through that hole.
Step 6: Attaching the Battery - Part One
1. Next to the cable hole, on the inside of the hat, use your glue gun to glue down the battery pack. Position the battery so that the USB ports are facing the cable hole.
Step 7: Attaching the Battery - Part Two
1. Using scraps that you cut from the hand warmer earlier, cut out a 2in x 3in piece of fabric.
2. Use the glue gun to glue this piece over the battery pack. This will help it blend in with the hat and make it more comfortable on your head.
Step 8: Concealing the Heated Pad's Power Cable
1. Fold up the power cable for the heated pad (the one we unplugged earlier) and wrap a piece of duct tape around it to keep it folded. When folding it, bend it back at intervals of 3 inches so it resembles the picture.
2. On the outside of the hat behind the battery, under the rim fold of the hat, glue the wire down with your glue gun. Apply the glue onto the tape wrapped around the wire so that it has a flatter surface to stick to.
3. Push the USB end of the heated pad's power cable through the cable hole that we made in step 5 so that it is sticking out next to the battery. Reconnect the other end of the power cable to the connection point on the heated pad.
4. Use the glue gun to make a small line of glue above the folded wire. Fold the hat's rim over the wire and press it onto that line of glue, until the glue dries. This will make it so the wire is always covered up and out of sight.
Step 9: Attaching the Phone Cable Clip
1. In the middle of the phone charging cable glue on the small clip. This clip will help keep the cord out of the way when you are charging your phone.
Step 10: Putting the Phone Cable Into the Hat
1. Stick the USB end of the phone cable into the cable hole so that it sits next to the battery.
2. Unfold the rim fold of the hat, (except the glued-on part of course) and cut a small hole about 1 inch to the right of the cable hole. This will be used in the next step.
3. With the hat rim still unfolded, wrap the rest of the phone cable around the bottom of the hat. When it reaches the duct-taped cable for the heated pad, you won't be able to keep going, so fold the phone cable back and wrap it around in reverse. Repeat this process until the phone cable (the white cable in the photos) has been fully hidden.
Step 11: Usage
You're now done with the construction of your hat. Here's how to use it:
1. To use the heating feature, plug in the USB end of the pad's power cable (the black cable in the photos) to the battery. It will start heating up and will keep you nice and cozy.
2. To use the charging feature:
a) Start by unwinding the phone charging cable from it's concealed location behind the hat's rim fold. Plug in the USB end of the cable to the battery. Run the other end of the phone cable through the hole you cut in step 10. Make sure to pull the phone cable through as far as it will go.
b) Then, attach the clip on the wire to the back of your shirt, jacket, or whatever other clothing is covering your back. Finally, plug it into your phone and let it sit inside your pocket, or hold it and use it.
3. To put the phone cord back in the hat, unplug it from your phone, unclip it, pull it back through the hole, and wrap it around the hat as shown in step 10.
Step 12: Enjoy!
This hat will keep you extra warm and save your phone's battery when needed! Enjoy and have fun with your new creation and use it whenever you like to!
