Introduction: Hot Simple Butterbeer

Winter is coming. It is the perfect time to breakout all the hot beverages. I have always loved hot drinks and hot soups on cold nights, warms you right up. I am Harry Potter fan and I thought now would be the time to give butterbeer a try. There are tons of recipes out there for hot butterbeer online so I took the main ingredients I could see from those and tried to make my own. I made three bad batches before I came to this recipe. This final recipe laid out in the guide here tastes like a creamy butterscotch in your mouth. If you like it please vote. There is plenty of room here to put your own spin on it, but here at least you have the basics laid out. Butterbeer making is definitely a topic I am going to revisit this winter.

Step 1: Gather Ingredients and Tools

First step of any cooking project is to gather up all the ingredients and culinary tools you will need. There is nothing worst than to start cooking something and having to toss it because you are missing something.

Ingredients:

-1 Teaspoon Sweetened Condensed Milk

-1 Teaspoon Butterscotch Topping

-2 Tablespoons Whipped Butter

-1 Cup Cream Soda

-1 Cup 2% Milk (whole, 1% and skim can be used instead but I recommend using at least 1% for taste)

Culinary Equipment:

-Medium Saucepan

-Can Opener

-Spoon

-Mixing Spoon

-Measuring Spoons

-Measuring Cup

-Stove Top Burner

-An Awesome Mug

Cooking Stats:

-Total Time = 7 to 10 minutes

Step 2: Melt the Butter

Measure out and add 2 tablespoons of whipped butter to your saucepan. Turn on your burner on low heat. Continue onto the next step. The butter will melt pretty fast.

Step 3: Add the Sweet Stuff

Retrieve a can opener and open up the sweetened condensed milk. Measure and add the 1 teaspoon of condensed milk to the saucepan. Then measure and add the 1 teaspoon of butterscotch topping to the saucepan.

Note:

In my other batches I used a lot more sweetened condensed milk and butterscotch topping. First batch I used a 1/4 cup of each and the second batch I used a tablespoon of each. Both resulted in the butterbeer being way to sweet. I think a teaspoon of each is plenty sweet enough but if you find that it is not up to your sweet tooth then simply add more of both the sweetened condensed milk and butterscotch topping. It is much easier to add more to your butterbeer than to take away.

Step 4: Pour in the Liquids

Get out your measuring cup. Measure and pour in the 1 cup of cream soda into the saucepan. Next grab the mixing spoon and combine the contents of the saucepan. Then measure and pour in the 1 cup of milk. Retrieve the mixing spoon again and combine the contents of the pan. Continue to heat you mixture and stir occasionally until its beverage temperature hot, when it starts to steam. Do not boil your brew. Then turn off your burner and get your awesome mug out.

Step 5: Optional Adult Beverage Step

If you are of legal drinking age then this may be a step you want to take advantage of to give your drink a little extra something to warm you up.

Add 1 shot of dark rum to your mixture and stir it in. I had success with Baileys as well if you prefer.

Note:

I also tried a batch with a winter beer. I think the hotness ruined it. I thought the winter flavoring of the beer would work well with the warm butterscotch but it did not taste very good. However, I think there is potential here for a cold butterbeer with beer instructructable that I may come back to in the near future.

Step 6: Pour and Drink Up

Taste test you concoction with the mixing spoon. If it tastes too sweet then add more milk or if it tastes not sweet enough then add more butterscotch and condensed milk. If it tastes perfect then great you have almost finished just get your mug and pour away.

Note if it starts to separate later while you are drinking take a spoon and just mix it back up.

Congratulations, you have made a butterbeer inspired drink and without the use of magic no less. Feel free to experiment on this recipe, I hope I have laid out the building blocks well for you. Now pop in a Harry Potter movie or open up one of the books. Drink and enjoy your brew.
