Introduction: How to Build a Chord on the Piano

Step 1:

Building a chord on the piano is very interesting. Lots of people believe its challenging, but not if you practice! First you will of course need a piano or keyboard to play on.

Step 2:

The next step is to find a key in which to build your chord. There are 7 different keys in which to play on the piano. The keys start at middle "C". Which is the center of the keyboard. The keys are C, D,E,F,G,A,B and then they repeat back to C.

Step 3:

On to the next step. Each key is made up of a scale. A scale is 7 notes within a key. This is the structure upon which you will build your chord. The scale is know as the "skeleton" of a key.

Step 4:

The following step is to learn your number scale. Each note within a the scale is given a designated number. The numbers are one through seven, because like stated before there are seven notes in a scale. In the key of "C", since this is they key we will build our chord, here are the note numbers. C-1, D-2,E-3, F-4, G-5, A-6, B-7.

Step 5:

Step 5 is going to deal with your hand posture. When playing the piano or keyboard you always want to have proper but comfortable hand posture. Relax your fingers but keep them erect. Your hand should almost look as if its a table. Keep your wrist up as well when playing. They should not be resting on the edge of your piano or anything else.

Step 6:

The next step is to sit properly while playing. Your sitting posture plays an important role in the way you will be able to stroke the keys. You should be sitting with an erect posture with your back straight. Also you should be sitting on the edge of your bench or chair.

Step 7:

The seventh step involved the use of the foot pedal. Also know as the damper pedal. This allows you to hold a note or chord out longer. You strike a key, and then press down on your pedal. When you would like for the note or chord to stop you lift up on the pedal and the sound will cease immediately. This can add a dramatic affect to your chord as well.

Step 8:

The eighth step is now where you finally get to build your chord. We've already discussed the scale numbers in step 4. Within a scale the notes that make a chord are the 1, the 3, and the 5. S now find the one the three and the five within a "C" scale. ( C, E, G)

Step 9:

Now to position the fingers correctly to play your chord. You will use your index finger to play "C", your middle finger to play "E", and finally your ring finger to play "G". Find the notes with your fingers by counting in the scale and place them on the keys. They should be all white keys that your fingers are on.

Step 10:

Last but not least to finally play your chord. After you have found the notes with your index, middle, and ring finger, press down on the notes in a gentle stroking manner as if you are wiping them down. Remember to keep your posture correct while sitting, and your wrists up as well. Your hand should be in the form of a table. You're now ten steps closer to being an amazing pianist! Remember to practice everyday and you will get better and better. Good luck!
