Introduction: How to Set Up and Use VoIP to Make Phone Calls

Voice-over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, lets you use your Internet connection to make phone calls. While this type of system won’t convince you to give up your cell phone, if you’re one of the few who still have a landline, this may be a better, and cheaper, option. You’ll still need a landline telephone for VoIP; it just won’t be plugged into the wall. And for business owners, replacing a handset-type phone system with VoIP will definitely save you money. Getting started is easy, and set up can be even easier. Here’s what you have to do:

Step 1: Select a VoIP Provider and Make Sure They Send You What You Need

You can’t just plug a phone into your router and start talking. You need to select a VoIP provider and pick a plan. Your provider will likely send you equipment, like an adaptor that connects your telephone and computer. You likely use a router for your current Internet set up, but if your VoIP provider doesn’t give you a VoIP-specific router, you should get one, since it is formatted for this specific use.

Step 2: Unhook Your Computer From Your Internet Connection

Your computer is likely connected to the Internet via an Ethernet cable. Most are blue. You can distinguish your Ethernet from other cables because it actually resembles an old fashion landline connection. Connect this Ethernet cable to the port on the adaptor labeled “Internet.” This port is universal across adaptors, regardless of the VoIP provider you use.

Step 3: Connect VoIP Adaptor to Your Computer

You’ll get a second Ethernet cable from your VoIP provider. Connect this cable from the adaptor, using any available Ethernet cable port, to your computer, using the port that you just disconnected from the Internet. This second Ethernet cable now connects your computer to your adaptor, which is connected to your Internet connection.

Step 4: Connect Your Phone

Using a regular phone cord, connect your telephone to the adaptor. There will be place on the back of your adaptor for this cord. Depending on the model of adaptor, it may be labeled phone or something like that. Once you’ve connected your phone to the adaptor, plug in your VoIP adaptor to a wall outlet.

Step 5: Make a Phone Call

Pick up the headset – which is the part you hold to your ear. You’ll hear a tone. Dial a phone number and wait for the person on the other end to answer. And then you can talk using the Internet to facilitate the telephone connection.
