How to Start a Car

Introduction: How to Start a Car

About: Weird guy. Kind of big. Professional upright bass player, computer programmer, and video gamer.

Cars are a very popular mode of transportation. They come in all shapes and sizes. But before driving a car, one should learn how to start it. That is what I will be showing you in this tutorial.

Step 1: Acquire Car

If you do not already have a car, you can find one at car a dealership and car dealerships exist pretty much all around the world.

Step 2: Determine Key to Start Car

After you acquire a car, you should've been given a key to start said car. If your keys are mixed up and you have no way of distinguishing the desired key, you may need to try all of them in the next step until you have succeeded. If you don't have a key, you can have a locksmith make one for you from the lock in your car but that can be quite costly.

Step 3: Gain Entry to Vehicle

If the doors to the vehicle are locked, insert the key to (preferably) the drivers side door lock, and turn the key either clockwise or counterclockwise; whichever unlocks the door for you.

Step 4: Insert Key Into Ignition

Enter vehicle and insert key into ignition.

Step 5: Turn Key Clockwise Until Engine Starts to Turn

Turn key clockwise until you hear the starter motor start to spin. You will easily be able to tell when this happens as the engine starts making noise and the car starts to shake. Usually after a few seconds, the sound the engine is making will greatly increase in pitch and start to smooth out. When this happens, let go of the key to turn off the starter motor. If the engine stalls, repeat the process. If it doesn't, then you are successful.

NOTE: Some newer cars just require you to enter the key into the ignition and then all you have to do is press a button. If this is the case, do so.

Also, if the car fails to start or the starter motor doesn't move at all, the car might have a dead battery or may be out of gas. If these aren't the cases, then your car may require a mechanic.

You missed a step: after you “Gain Entry” and before you “Insert Key”, you must “Sit in the Driver’s Seat”. My husband thinks it’s perfectly fine to start the car by standing outside it, on the passenger side with the passenger door open, and reaching over the passenger seat to insert the key and turn it on. Please help him out.

Now throw in a 3rd pedal and stick into the equation. Press the clutch in with your left foot and make sure the vehicle is in Neutral. Keep your left foot into the clutch and start as you normally would.

What if it is one of those keyless systems from Nissan. How does this apply?
