Introduction: How to Make Coffee Using a Moka Pot

Step 1: Unboxing Your Moka Pot

  1.  Remove the packaging materials from the coffee maker and any warning labels inside the moka pot before first time use.
  2. Rinse the exterior and interior of the moka pot thoroughly with water only. Do not use any detergent or abrasive towel as they may cause damage to the pot.

Step 2: Understanding the Moka Pot's Components

The moka pot is composed of three (3) main parts: top chamber, funnel filter, and base (heating vessel).

Step 3: Unassemble the Moka Pot

Grip the base and twist the top chamber of the moka pot counterclockwise to unscrew the top chamber from the base. Set the top chamber to the side.

Step 4: Remove Funnel Filter

Remove the funnel filter from the base and place it on a flat surface.


Step 5: Fill Base With Water

Fill the base with water until it is level with the valve. Do not overfill the base.


Step 6: Insert the Funnel Into the Base.

Step 7: Fill the Funnel With Coffee Grounds

Use a spoon to fill the funnel with coffee ground level with the top. Do not press the grounds down.Note: Be careful! Pressing the grounds may cause too much pressure inside the pot causing it to explode, which can lead to injury.


Step 8: Wipe Off Excess Grounds

Wipe off any excess coffee grounds from the funnel’s rim with a paper towel.


Step 9: Securely Attach the Top Chamber to the Base

Take the top chamber of the moka pot and tightly twist onto the base in a clockwise motion.


Step 10: Place Moka Pot on a Heat Source

Place the moka pot on top of a heat source over medium-high heat. Note: If using a gas stove, the flame must not go beyond the rim of the base.


Step 11: Observe the Brew

Open the lid of the moka pot to observe brew. Close the lid once the coffee begins to flow into the top chamber. Note: Close the lid if the coffee begins to sputter to avoid burns.


Step 12: Move the Moka Pot to the Edge of the Heat Source

As the coffee begins to flow into the top chamber, grab the handle of the moka pot and carefully move the pot to the edge of the heat source. Note: If using a gas stove, keep the moka pot centered on the heat source and lower the flame level as low as possible.


Step 13: Turn Off the Heat Source

Turn off the heat source once the top chamber is full or when the coffee has stopped brewing into the top chamber. 


Step 14: Pour the Coffee Into a Mug & Enjoy

Carefully grab the handle and pour the freshly brewed coffee into a mug.


Step 15: How to Clean Your Moka Pot

Your moka pot should be cleaned after every use to avoid product build up. The moka pot is not dishwasher safe. Do not place your moka pot into a dishwasher.

1.   Wait for the moka pot to cool completely to avoid burns.

2.   Twist the top chamber of the moka pot counterclockwise to disconnect it from the base.

3.   Thoroughly rinse the interior and exterior of the top chamber with warm water only. DO NOT use any detergent or abrasive towel.

4.   Remove the funnel filter from the base. Discard the used grounds into a trash can.

5.   Rinse the funnel filter with warm water. Place the funnel filter to the side.

6.   Empty any remaining liquid from the base.

7.   Rinse the base with warm water. Place the base to the side.

8.   Use a paper towel to thoroughly dry the exterior and interior parts (base, funnel, and top chamber) of the moka pot.

9.   Reassemble the moka pot.
