How to Make Henna Paste

Introduction: How to Make Henna Paste

Fresh henna powder

Lemon juice Sugar

Essential oils (I used tea tree)

Mixing bowl and spoon

Plastic wrap

Henna bottle

Henna tip

Rubbing alcohol

Olive oil

Mild soap

Gloves for handling henna

Ziplock bag

I don’t know about you but whenever I see a henna stand at a fair or event I always jump in line to get one. Most people don’t realize that with the right supplies and some help, anyone can make henna! Professional henna tattoos can be quite costly so why not make it youself. Yes, the supplies can be expensive but if you can find them online or around your house it makes a lot of paste.

Step 1: Sift Out 1/4 Cup of Henna Powder Into the Mixing Bowl.

Sift carefully because clumps in the henna paste will clog the decorating tip. Store leftover henna paste in the fridge to keep it fresh.

Step 2: Add in 1/4 Cup of Lemon Juice.

Stir while you add to prevent clumps. If the substance still seems a little thick you can add a tiny bit more lemon juice but don’t let it get to runny.

Step 3: Stir in 1/2 Tablespoon of Sugar and ½ a Teaspoon of Essential Oil.

I recommend using tea tree oil because it contains terpineol which will help the henna dry. After adding the sugar into the mix it should be silky.

If the mixture is too thick, you can add a little more lemon juice and a few more drops of essential oils. It should be the consistency of toothpaste.

Step 4: Cover With Plastic Wrap.

Leave henna to sit for 24 hours in room temp. The paste will get a little thicker.

Step 5: Scoop the Paste Into the Henna Bottle.

If this is difficult you can scoop it into a bag first, cut off the corner, then squeeze the paste into the bottle and attach the tip.

Step 6: Wash the Area With Soap and Water.

This will make the dye seep into the skin better and create a darker pigment.

Step 7: Plan It Out.

Figure out where you want your henna and what it is going to be of. Henna stains pretty fast so you don’t want to make any mistakes. If you want to use a reference picture you can or you could create your own design.

Step 8: Start Designing!

Either use right away or keep it in the fridge. Experiment with the pressure you apply the henna with and how hard you squeeze the bottle. If you make a mistake just wipe off the henna with a paper towel making sure you remove all of the residue.

Step 9: Leave It for at Least 6 Hours.

Every hour or when it starts to crack you can wet it with a mixture of sugar and lemon juice. Dab it on gently with a paper towel. If you are doing something active or plan on taking a nap you should cover the tattoo with plastic wrap.

Step 10: Removing the Paste.

To remove the dry paste you will want to gently scrape it off and then rinse off the residue. Throughout the next 12 hours the stain will change from a lighter orange shade to a reddish brown.

You're pretty good at that! I don't think my hands would be steady enough to get such even designs :)
