Introduction: How to Make - Wooden Heart Magnet

About: I hope i can show you that you really dont need to be a master craftsman to create and build great projects, and hopefully inspire you to start making yourself. I will try upload a video every Monday but due …

How to turn a scrap piece of wood into a heart shaped magnet.

I made this for mothers day (26th of March here in the UK) as a small something, mainly because my mum is a bit of a magnet collector!

Its simple but i think it turned out great.

You could change a few things to make it even better, you could carve or inlay, even cut a recess in the middle and add a picture.

Step 1: Cut, Glue & Shape

I found a scrap piece of wood that i thought would make a nice magnet, simply cut out two heart shaped and glued them together to make it a bit thicker.

Once the glue was dry i tool a rasp and cleaned up all the edges and refined the shape to something i liked.

I rounded over the edges and that gave it a much nicer shape than having clean cut lines.

Step 2: Fit Magnets

For the magnets i used 8mm x 3mm rare earth magnets.

To fit them all i did was drill a 8mm hole roughly 3mm deep so it would sit flat against a surface, then i just used some super glue to keep them in place.

Once the glue was dry i gave it a test just to make sure it was right.

Step 3: Sand, Sand & Sand Some More

Now the fun begins.

I sanded all of the magnet - shaping it with 80 grit and smoothing it out with 120, 240,500 and finally 1,200.

After all the sanding it felt like silk, im not kidding it was so smooth just what i was after.

Step 4: Finish

To finish i used a clear coat - simple paint on and leave to dry.

I lightly sanded at 1,200 between coats to keep the smooth finish i wanted.

I ended up putting 3 coats on for a semi gloss finish.

Thats it. a nice simple project , but a great result in the end.

I would love to hear any comments / thoughts.

Hope you enjoyed it.
