Introduction: How to Make a Garbage Plate

Introduction: The garbage plate was originated in Rochester, NY. The large portion of college students in the Rochester area helped popularize this dish. The name may not sound appetizing but this is the perfect meal for a Sunday while watching football or after long night when you are craving everything in sight. The base of this dish is any combination of either macaroni salad, baked beans, and hash-browns. After the first layer comes either a burger, sausage, or hot dog layer. In this recipe I will be using burgers as the second layer. The last layer is the delicious meat sauce followed by a dressing of ketchup, mustard and hot sauce.

Step 1: Ingredients List

Serves 2-3 people

  • Baby White Potatoes
  • 4 - Pack of Burger Patties
  • Sliced American Cheese
  • Pre-Made Macaroni Salad
  • Water
  • Ketchup
  • Yellow Mustard
  • Chili Powder
  • Red Pepper Flakes
  • Garlic Powder
  • Onion Powder
  • Salt/Pepper

Step 2: Making the Hash-browns

After washing the baby white potatoes, cut into fourths and place them in a greased pan over medium heat. Add salt and pepper for flavor and cook until golden brown or as desired.

Step 3: Burgers

Cook two patties in greased pan over medium heat. Season with salt/pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder. Cook until slightly pink center or at personal preference.

Tip: Only flip the patties once to cook evenly and don't press down on the patties to keep them juicy.

Step 4: Meat Sauce

Place the two leftover patties into greased pan over medium heat. Break patties into small pieces until there is an even consistency. Add 1/4 cup of water and cook until the meat is a nice even brown. Add chili powder, red pepper flakes, onion powder, garlic powder, mustard and ketchup. Stir until the sauce thickens up and ingredients are evenly mixed.

Step 5: Layer One: Hash-browns and Macaroni Salad (or Baked Beans)

Lay the desired amount of hash-browns and macaroni salad side by side on the plate. The foods that are high in carbs serve as the base of the dish.

Step 6: Layer 2: Add Burger (sausage or Hot Dog)

Simply place burger on top of bottom layer adding a slice of American cheese. This layer can be substituted with sausage or hot dogs. The second layer is the main protein layer of the dish.

Step 7: Layer 3: Add Meat Sauce and Condiments.

Pour meat sauce over all the other layers. Top with ketchup, mustard, and hot sauce and serve with a slice of bread. Bon Appétit!
