Introduction: How to Make a Miniature Tesla Coil

About: Electronics Enthusiast and a Software Engineer

Tesla coil is a radio frequency oscillator that drives an air-core double-tuned resonant transformer to produce high voltages at low currents.Tesla's original circuits as well as most modern coils use a simple spark gap to excite oscillations in the tuned transformer. More sophisticated designs use transistor or thyristor switches oscillators to drive the resonant transformer.

Miniature Tesla coil also does a same work but it does not produce as much high voltages.

Now I am going to instruct how to make a miniature tesal coil with less number of components.

Lets Get Started..

Step 1: Components Required

22 gauge magnetic Copper wire - 30 cm [Banggood]

28 gauge magnetic Copper wire - 10 m [Banggood]

PVC Pipe [Diameter - 2cm ; Length 9cm]

Switch -1 [Banggood]

2N2222A Transistor - 1 [Banggood]

22K Ohm Resistor - 1 [Banggood]

9V Battery and Clip - 1 [Banggood]

Cardboard Sheet [10 x 10 cm] - 1

Step 2: Circuiting

1. Take pvc pipe and winde 300-400 turns of 28G copper wire.[Primary coil]

2. Apply tape at bottom and winde 4-5 turns of 22G copper wire [Secondary coil].

3. Now remove enamel of copper wires at end.

4. Solder 22k ohm resistor to the base of 2n2222 transistor.

5. Solder bottom end wire of primary coil to base.

6. Solder one end of secondary coil to collector.

7.Solder Positive terminal of battery clip to Switch and negative terminal to emitter pin.

8. Now solder another end of secondary coil and another pin of switch to the free end of 22k resistor.

9. Leave the top end wire of primary coil free in air.

Circuiting Completed

Circuit and Datasheets attached.

Step 3: Construction and Testing

Don't ever use it for your households. It will burn everything if it doest meet the safe voltage criteria.

I guess you should study a little about transformers and electronics cos you seems to be a beginner. Thus type of project can harm if not used considerably. And for your answer, enameled gauge wire is used only. That wire which you are talking about is just for house wiring and consist of a lot of wires inside its covering. Your question seems to be very noob type BTW.

I believe you have your coils labelled incorrectly. The primary coil it eh one with the fewest turns and the secondary coil has the more turns.

    Hello.
This is a nice and easy method, infact I just made it and it works very perfectly.
But please may I know the output frequency of this mini tesla coil?

    Answer 1 year ago

you need to use enameled, this prevents shorts....just remember though that you need to sand off the enamel off the ends of the wire before soldering to components, otherwise it will not work.

2n2222a transistor is working in low current lod but in this Tesla coile current rating is high so is problem is comon
But u use 3-4 transistor in parallel so is working is good and heating problem is reduce

    Bro Is it work????
But transistor is very hot, and don't work!
    why?

becuase passing cuurent range is high so transistor is heat and after they burn so use other high current transistor

i m using transistor BC547 because they say that 2n2222a is not available here and now my Tesla coil is not working. could transistor be the reason for the non - functioning of the coil ?

I made a tesla coil bt it's not working
    I used a 22 kohm resistance a 2222 type transistor
I think the problem in in no. Of turns of primary and secondary coil
Help me to determine those turns pls
And the coil i shoul use....
