Introduction: How to Make a Paper Origami Fortune Teller

Step 1: Gather Materials

For this project, you will need the following materials:

Supplies

-1 sheet of standard 8.5" X 11" paper

-1 pair of scissors

-1 writing utensil (multiple colors of writing utensils is recommended but not required)

Step 1: Setting Up

Place paper on a flat surface as pictured in the image shown. Fold the upper left-hand corner of the paper across the page to a point just above the bottom right corner of the page. You should be left with a rectangular shape of leftover paper. Using your pair of scissors, cut off this remaining exposed section of paper, leaving yourself with a perfect folded triangle of paper as shown in the image. You can discard the paper that was cut off as you won't be needing it anymore. After you're left with the square sheet of paper, open it up and fold it once more the opposite direction, creating an 'X' out of the creases.

Step 2: Folding, Folding & More Folding

Open up your square sheet of paper and fold each corner in to the center of the page as shown in the image. You will be left with a diamond shape of paper as pictured below.

Step 3: More Folding

Flip your diamond shaped paper over and fold each corner into the center of the page once more as shown in the image.

Step 4: Opening Your Fortune Teller

Flip the paper over again and slide your thumbs into each tab you've created, opening up your fortune teller. Now that you've created the physical fortune teller itself, you're not quite done yet, you still have to color and write in on each flap!

Step 5: The Fun Part

Now comes the fun part! Writing / coloring in your fortune teller and determining the purpose. On the 4 outer-most flaps color them each their own color as shown in the image. You don't necessarily need different colored writing utensils for this part, as you can write out "orange" and "blue" for example instead.

Step 6: More Writing

Open up the four flaps again as shown in the provided image and write in varying numbers between 1-10. This will determine how many times you cycle the fortune teller while using it!

Step 7: The Final Portion!

Open up each inner flap to finish your fortune teller - this is the fun part! Write in fortunes in each of the 'X' as shown in the image. These are the fortunes that your friends will be read at the end of each game. You can be as creative as you'd like with this part! You can write positive fortunes, negative fortunes, or even dares if you're interested!

Step 8: Using the Fortune Teller

After you've colored, numbered, and written in each individual fortune, it's time to play! Insert your fingers into the 4 flaps you created earlier. You begin by asking the player to pick a color. If the player picks blue for example, you'd cycle the teller 4 times in each direction, left and right respectively. After the 4 cycles, your sections of varying numbers will appear. Ask the player to pick a number and cycle the teller that corresponding amount of turns. The result will be the fortune pre-written under the final flap! Enjoy.
