On the following we will learn how to service the engine of a BRIGGS & STRATTON mower, one of the most recognized and common brands for gasoline mower engines.

A continuación aprenderemos a darle servicio a una podadora con motor BRIGGS & STRATTON, una de las marcas más reconocidas y comunes para motores de podadoras a gasolina.

Step 1: Getting the Mower's Manual

Obtain your mower’s manual on the internet, depending on the model and type. These data and more can be obtained in the chassis of your mower. This step is recommended to get a general idea of how YOUR mower works. For the BRIGGS & STRATTON engines manual, check the link below.

Obtener el manual de tu podadora en internet, dependiendo del modelo y tipo. Estos datos y más los puedes obtener en el chasis de tu podadora. Step 2: Materials

Tools needed, they can vary depending on the machine:

Ratchet de ¾’’
5/8’’ Ratchet wrench
10” Adjustable wrench
Gauntlets and a piece of paperboard
Screwdrivers
Triangular file
Spark plug
Air filter
1 liter of 10w30 or SAE 30 oil
Funnel

Buscar las herramientas a utilizar, los tamaños de las herramientas pueden variar dependiendo de los modelos:

Ratchet de ¾’’
Copa de ratchet de 5/8’’
Llave ajustable de 10’’
Guantes de jardinería y un trozo de cartón
Desarmador
Lima triangular
Bujía
Filtro de aire
1 Liter Aceite 10w30 ó SAE 30
Embudo

Step 3: Removing the Blade

Remove the blade with the corresponding cup or wrench, in my case I use a 5/8 ". The blade of the mower should be held with some protection, gautlets, cardboard, whatever you have on hand that you can protect your hands from the edge of the blade.

Quitar la cuchilla con la copa correspondiente, en mi caso utilizo una de 5/8’’. Se debe sostener la cuchilla de la podadora con algún tipo de protección, guantes, cartón, lo que tengas a la mano que puedas proteger tus manos del filo de la cuchilla.

Step 4: Drain Plug

After removing the blade, proceed to remove the drain plug with the help of the ratchet. Before opening the drain completely, place a container large enough to store the used oil, the total volume generally does not exceed one liter.

Luego de quitar la cuchilla se procede a remover el tapón de
drenaje con ayuda del ratchet. Antes de destaparlo se coloca un recipiente lo bastante grande para almacenar el aceite usado, el volumen total generalmente no es mayor de un litro.

Step 5: Spark Plug

While waiting for the oil to be drained, we can take the opportunity to replace the spark plug with the help of the adjustable wrench, the spark plug is located on the front of the machine.

Mientras se espera el vaciado del aceite, podemos aprovechar para cambiar la bujía con ayuda de la llave ajustable, esta se encuentra en la parte frontal de la máquina.

Step 6: Sharpen Blade

We can also sharpen the blade. This is sharpened with the triangular file in the observed direction.

También podemos afilar la cuchilla. Esta se afila con la lima triangular en la dirección observada.

Step 7: Oil Change

Clean the drain plug and put it back in place and fill with oil to the level indicated on the oil meter.

Limpiamos y colocamos el tapón de drenaje en su lugar, luego llenamos con el aceite hasta el nivel indicado en el medidor de aceite.

Step 8: Air Filter Change

With a screwdriver remove the air filter screw, remove the old filter and clean the filter compartment. Then submerge the filter in oil and remove the excess, or add in small amounts to cover the entire surface. We put the filter in it's place and screw the air filter screw back.

Con un desarmador quitamos el tornillo del filtro de aire, retiramos el filtro viejo y limpiamos el compartimento del filtro. Luego sumergimos el filtro en aceite y retiramos el exceso, o lo agregamos en pequeñas cantidades a fin de cubrir toda la superficie del mismo. Colocamos el filtro en su lugar y atornillamos.
