Introduction: How to Start a Garden

Here is a step-by-step on how to start a garden.

Step 1: Choose an Area for the Garden

First choose the area where to have the garden. Also decide how large or small the area is going to be.

Step 2: Mark the Perimeter

Mark the perimeter by either using stone blocks/rocks or by using weed/grass killer. After the perimeter has been marked, kill the grass with in the perimeter (this process will not harm the soil and the plants that are going to be planted, the grass will be killed in a short period of time of 24 hours).

Step 3: Till Over the Dead Grass

This can be done either by a large tilling machine or hire a landscaper to till up the space marked.

Tilling the ground is an important step to allow the plants to freely grow out and will help them grow faster than not tilling up the ground.

Step 4: Pick the Seeds and Plants

Plant Greeneries are great to find an assortment of plants and packages seeds. Wal-Mart and Menards are also a great place to find them as well in the garden section of the store. Choose a variety of seeds and plants or flowers.

Step 5: Mark the Area for Each Row

Before any planting is done, mark the row with a popsicle stick with the name of the plant/seed on both ends of the row. This step is very important knowing which row has which plant/seed is in the row with no confusion of what plant it is.

Step 6: Time to Plant the Seeds

When planting seeds use a garden hoe to make a straight line in the dirt, make sure to read on the back of the package of how many inches the plants need to be planted and how deep the seeds need to be planted to ensure the grow properly and healthy. Above is a chart of how far away each plant should be apart for a few plants

After reading the package place a seed inside of the row, make sure the entire row is used, if the package is empty half way through the row, use another package of the same seeds to fill up the rest of the row then cover up the entire row with dirt.

Step 7: Here Is a Video on How to Plant Tomatoe Plants, This Video Can Also Help With Other Plants As Well.

Step 8: Caged Plants

Caged plants need a bit more help staying up-right such as tomatoes, peas, beans and peppers especially. A wire cage stabilizes the plant and helps the plant grow upwards with the weight of vegetable.

Step 9: Time to Water

Make sure to water the plants daily, remember to not over water the plants. If it rains one day, do not water the plants, too much water will stunt the plants growth.

Step 10: Don't Forget to Weed the Garden

Along with daily watering, weeds are another daily nuisance. Make sure to get the entire weed, most people grab the top of the weed and pull it out, but they are missing the roots of the weed.

Dig a hole around the base of the weed in the dirt to ensure the entire weed will be taken out. After the weed is taken care of fill in the hole with more dirt. Do this for every weed in the garden.

Weeds can take essential nutrients away from the plant, this is why weeding is an important step.

Step 11: For the Next Time When Planting a Garden

Next year when the time comes to plant another garden again make sure to not plant the same seeds in the same area, that will cause the plants to either not grow as much or not at all.

Happy Gardening and hope you have an abundance of plants!
