How to Evenly Split a Large Log.

Introduction: How to Evenly Split a Large Log.

About: I am a teacher who enjoys environmentally responsible woodworking. Most evenings will find me in the shop working with my now 8 year old son Shay who is both my greatest helper and biggest fan.

Building a bench?  Making fence post rails? This is how I split a large and heavy Popular log lengthwise.  In our case it was because it was too large to hand load.  It was a spur of the moment find and I had few tools to work with.  I think the key here is a very sharp chainsaw and lots of wedges.  Even with about half of the tools I needed, we still managed to pull it off and save a valuable log from being cut up for firewood.

Improvise, adapt, overcome; the true essence of
    craftsmanship.

I like poplar myself- painted it makes a durable project,
unfinished it makes a serviceable secondary wood for drawer sides and backs,
    etc.

Did you use a ripping blade on your chainsaw? Regular chainsaw blades are made for crosscutting.
