Introduction: Infinity Mirror Wall Lights

After making an infinity mirror clock and an infinity mirror candle holder I decided to make an infinity mirror wall light. This time instead of placing the mirror parallel to each other I decided to place the back mirror at an angle so I can get a curved effect. This was actually the main reason I started this project. As an experiment to see how this would work.

Of course I made a video of the process because my English are bad so a video would be a better way to explain! Click on the picture below!

Step 1: Preparing the Wood

Lets take a look on the tools and materials I used for this project!

Tools:

  • Band saw
  • Radial arm saw
  • Circular saw
  • Planer
  • Soldering equipment
  • Glass cutter
  • 20mm drill bit
  • Drill
  • Sander
  • Measure tape

Materials:

  • Wood (any species would do, I used Niangon)
  • Aluminum channel for the led strip
  • LED strip (12 V, 14.4 W)
  • AC adapter for the led strip
  • One way mirror
  • Regular mirror
  • Wood glue
  • Electrical cord
  • Wood finish
  • Silicon Adhesive
  • Sand paper 80, 120, 240 grit

The first step is to mill the wood pieces so we can have the base to work on.So I started out by rough cutting the wood pieces on the band saw and then gave them their final dimensions on the planer. the final dimensions for each piece was 100 x 7.5 x 2.0 cm

Step 2: The Grooves

For each piece we going to need to cut two grooves. One for the front mirror and one for the aluminum channel that holds the led strip. My mirror's thickness was 5 mm so I cut a groove of 5.5 mm wide and 10 mm deep for my mirror to sit in using my circular saw. After several passes the groove for my aluminum channel was 15 mm wide and 10 mm deep. If you have a different channel in size you can change those dimensions accordingly.

Print the provided plan at 1:1 scale to see where the grooves are positioned on the wood.

Step 3: Gluing the Aluminum Channel

Use silicon adhesive to glue the aluminum channel in the groove.

Step 4: Cut All the Pieces

Now its time to cut all the pieces to length. Each lamp has six pieces so we will need 18 pieces for all the three lamps. Use any woodworking saw to cut the wood and aluminum together. The metal channel is really soft and most blades do not have any problem cutting it. So cut 18 pieces 14.5 cm long at 30° angle.

Print out the plans from the pdf file and use them as templates for cutting the pieces.

Step 5: Cut the Mirrors

For this build I used a 5.00 mm thick one way mirror in front and a regular 3.0 mm mirror for the back. Cut the pieces so they fit inside the groove. Actually each side of the hexagonal should be 0.7 mm wider than the inner dimensions of the wooden hexagonal frame. We need 3 pieces of one way mirror and three more of the regular mirror.

Step 6: Gluing the Frame

Use wood glue to glue the sides of the hexagonal frame together. After the glue dries splines can be used to reinforce the whole structure. I did not use any splines on this build but I think its better to use.

Step 7: Sanding

I used 80, 120, 240 sandpaper to prepare the wood for finish.

Step 8: The LED Strip

Measure how long the led strip needs to be and cut three pieces, one for each lamp. On the two of them solder two wires on each end. (+ and -). On the third strip solder two wires on the one end. We want to connect the led strips in series.

Drill a hole on one side of the wooden frame that passes through the aluminum channel. Then feed all the wires through the hole and outside the wooden frame. Place the plastic channel covers in place and give them a test.

Finally glue the back mirrors on the wooden frames using some neutral silicone.

Step 9: Wood Blocks to Hide Wire Connections

Cut three pieces of wood 6.0 x 4.0 x 2.5 cm and drill two 20 mm wide holes on the back side of them as shown on the pics above half way in the wood. From the other side drill two 6 mm holes all the way in the wood.

Step 10: Led Connections

Connect the led strips in series and cover the connections with the wooden blocks you made in the previous step. Use some cable ties around the cables to prevent them from slipping through the hole and damaging the solder connection. Secure the blocks in place with some glue OR with two screws from the inside of the lamp.

Step 11: Finish

Mask the mirrors and cables with masking tape and finish the wooden frames. You can pain them or use a clear lacquer.
