Introduction: JEWELRY HOLDER
Here's a fun woodshop project that allows you to show off your guilty-collection of jewelry. I made this in the woodshop with leftover 2x4 pieces. It measures 2'x3'.
I encourage you to make one. Show off your posts and hooks! It can further inspire you to begin creating your own jewelry... Enjoy!
Step 1: Prepare Wood
Join/Plane your wood and cut it to your desired length. I would keep the pieces no greater than 3/4" in width and no greater than 2" in height.
Step 2: Cut Holes & Slits
Measure (and mark) the placement and pattern of your holes & slits:
I.e. I did an A-B-A-B pattern, so that my pairs of earrings would not collide with one another. However, you could maximize the wood by drilling more holes - it's all about your desired effect.
This is also the time for measuring - EEP! Use a ruler to take a long measurement of your length, divide it up into equal chunks, and work from there. Exactness will be key, so I suggest getting a second opinion at this point if you're not confident with your old-school math skills.
Cut the holes / slits:
I used a stationary drill press and a very small drill bit for the holes.
The slits are more tricky - ask me for further advice.
Step 3: Sand Away!
I used a palm-sander and one grit of sandpaper. Sanding by hand does the trick, too.
Step 4: Glue
Assemble the piece. I used Gorilla wood glue and a brad nailer.
Step 5: Finish
Apply 2-3 coats of your chosen finish! I finished this piece with a Polyshades 1 step finish – However, it turned very dark and I would recommend using a typical finish.
As always, work in a well-ventilated area, wear gloves, and keep lava soap.
Step 6: Hang Your Jewelry
The final and most important step.
