Introduction: Key Duplication DIY

About: Hi, I'm Yaron, A proud father of 3, A software engineer by trade and a creator by DNA. My love for building things started at an early age working with my dad over the summers, now this love fills my free time…

A little tribute to MacGyver, one of the best TV series!

P.S

Talking about Richard Dean Anderson, not the new one...lol

Step 1: Stuff You Will Need

  • Empty plastic bottle
  • Cutting tool (scissors should do the trick)
  • Screwdriver
  • Lighter
  • Wide Sellotape
  • Lock and its keys

Step 2: Key Stamp

In this step, we will copy the key and create a plastic replicate.

In order to do so, we will burn the key with the lighter until there is a thin layer of soot.

Be sure to burn the right side of the key, the one which is flat (the other side is curvy).

Step 3: Replication

For this step we need:

  1. Key with soot (from the previous step).
  2. A piece of the plastic from the bottle.
  3. A piece of sellotape.

Replication steps:

  1. Place the sellotape on the blacken key, tighten it with your finger.
  2. Carefully remove the sellotape with the key stamp and place it on the piece of plastic.
  3. Cut the exact shape of the key, be very very precise.
  4. To check that it came out good, hold both the Key and the replica together and compare the shapes.

Step 4: Testing

The purpose of the plastic key is to hold the lock in open mode.

First Insert the key in the lock, If it's not inserted smoothly try to struggle with it but not too hard.

After it's inserted use the screwdriver to turn the lock open.

That is it!

If you liked it, don't hesitate to leave a comment or even vote ;)

I don't understand the purpose of this. If you already have the original key, and you need the original key to use the duplicate key, what good is the duplicate key? To my understanding, the purpose of a duplicate key is to give to someone else so that they have a key that will work in the lock.

My son wanted to learn to pick locks. This looks a lot easier---assuming that you have the key to the lock. Will try it.

Then what's the point? The reason you pick locks is because you don't have a key. If you already have the key to do this it defeats what your son wants to do. Also lock picking is really easy on regular door locks and the like, just look up a youtube video.

I think your question should be referred to "Instructables" support?
