Key rack made from keys and pallet wood highlighting the importnce of sustainability and recycling.

Supplies

Materials

Recycled pallet wood 25-30 cm

Sandpaper

20mm screws

Measuring tape/ ruler

Blowtorch

Drill

3x keys

Varnish

String (approx. 25cm)

D-loops x2

Step 1:

Take your recycled pallet wood and make sure that it is clear from any nails or debris.

Step 2:

Use a piece of sandpaper to any smooth rough edges. Watch out for splinters!

Step 3:

Measure the wood and make 3 marks evenly where the keys are going to be placed.

Step 4:

Use your drill to create 3 pilot holes in the wood. Be sure not to go right through the wood!

Step 5:

Next use the blowtorch to burn the wood to give it a more natural and rustic look.

This time the blowtorch is used to bend the keys. Use a pair of pliers to hold the key over the flame for approx. 30 seconds and simply bend the end of the key to create a hook.

Step 6:

The key should look like this with the end acting as a hook, ideal for hanging your keys!

Step 7:

Next the 20mm screws will be used to attach the keys to the wood. The hole in the top of the keys should be a perfect fit for the screws.

Step 8:

Next is the varnishing. We have used a matt varnish spray and applied a coat, leaving it for 30 minutes to dry.

Step 9:

Once dry, turn over and attach the D-loops to the back of the hanger. Ensure that the hook part of the loop is to the top so that the string can be easily attached.

Step 10:

Place the string through the D-loops and tie a knot either side. Cut off any excess string!
