Forgive my ignorance: how do you use it?

Place the blank of the knife on the flat part, run the edge to be side against the scribe. The scribe will leave a mark on the side of the blank. The mark needs to be in the middle of the thickness of the blade. That mark is used as a reference when grinding the bevel of the knife to be sure to have a streight edge. Sometimes the marks are two. It depends on the way the bevel is made and the hardening process.
