Introduction: Lazy Suit

Introduction:

  • In this project, I aim to create a onesie that can make people get up less to get things they need during gaming or watching TV. With such kind of onesie, one is able to enjoy his leisure time in a more comfortable way. Thus, I decided to design and create this lazy suit that includes many functions that help people carry things around instead of getting up to get them.
  • What is a lazy suit? The lazy suit is a onesie that has add-on functions can help people make their life easier by reducing the time that they need to get up to get something. For example, in the lazy suit I design for myself, there is a pillow that can be attached or detached, a water bottle carrier that can be adjusted to fit different size, a tissue carrier, a snack carrier, and a pocket. With these functions, one is able to fall asleep wherever he wants and can carry drink and snacks with him.
  • For this project, it is easy to have all the materials prepared. However, it will be hard for one to make the garment without any basic cloth making knowledge. It is also hard to add designed functions after the onesie is made first. It would be better to have a sketched blueprint to clarify the design and makes it easier to make. It will cost around eight to ten hours depending on how many add-on functions you want to put on the onesie. For budget, it will cost around 60 dollars to 80 dollars. The cost may also vary according to the fabric you are using.

List of Challenges:

  • Make sure you close up both endings of the zip or the zip will easily break off.
  • Make sure you have enough needles for the sewing machine that you can replace if one broke during the sewing process.
  • It is challenging to add function elements to the garment after the onesie has been sewed together. It will be a good idea to plan everything ahead and sew each part on to the fabric before closing up the onesie.
  • Always sew the before you close up the onesie.

Possible Risks:

  • When you experiment with different fabrics, the needle of the sewing machine might break due to the different hardness of the fabric.
  • When you sew the add-on elements to the garment, you might accidentally sew in part of the fabric of the garment that you does not want to be sewed together. Check before you start sewing.

Step 1: Material List and Tool List

Zipper

Pick the style you like on the Amazon

Tool List

  • Fabric Scissor
  • Sewing Machine
  • Fabric Pin
  • Sewing Kit (Needle and Thread)
  • Fabric Chalk

Step 2: Layout Your Size

Find a sweatshirt with a zipper and a sweatpant that is your size. Wear them and mark where the bottom of the sweatshirt is on the pants and lay them flat on the fabric.

Step 3: Trace Half of the Front

In this Step, you will trace half of the combination of your sweatshirt and sweatpants on the fabric. Make sure that you trace the edge precisely.

Step 4: Cut Out the Pattern

  • Fold the fabric in half so that when you cut the fabric you will get two same patterns.
  • Cut the pattern out carefully.
  • Now you have two half-front of the onesie.

Step 5: Repeat Step 3 and Step 5 for the Back

  • Turn your clothes over with the back of them facing up
  • Trace half of the back precisely
  • Fold the fabric in half so that you will get two exact same patterns when you cut
  • Cut the pattern along with the line
  • Now you have two half-back patterns for the onesie.

Step 6: Trace the Sleeve

  • Fold the fabric first
  • Place the sleeve along the side that is closed
  • Trace the pattern of half of the sleeve
  • Repeat the same step for the other sleeve

Step 7: Cut Out the Pattern for the Sleeve

  • Cut out both sleeves along with the traced line
  • Now you should have six pieces of fabric, including
    • two half-front
    • two half-back
    • two sleeves

Step 8: Sew the Back Mid Line

  • Sew the two half-back's mid-line together.
    • From neck to crotch

Step 9: Sew the Shoulder

  • Pin the mid-line of two half-front pieces together
    • DO NOT sew them together
    • This is the place where the zipper gonna be
  • Open up two pieces (Picture 2)
    • let the pin face inside
  • Aline the front piece with the back piece
  • Sew two shoulders together (Picture 3)

Step 10: Sew the Sleeves

  • Pin the sleeve pattern in the way it will be sewed (Picture 1 and Picture 2)
  • Sew the sleeve onto the garment (Picture 3)
  • Repeat the same steps for the second sleeve
  • Now you get sleeves sewed (Picture 4 and Picture 5))

Step 11: Sew the Outer Side of the Sleeve and the Pants

  • Pin the outer side of the sleeve and the pants together (Picture 1 and Picture 2)
  • Sew the part where it is pinned
  • Do the same steps for both sides of the garment

Step 12: This Is How It Looks So Far

Step 13: Sew the Inner Side of the Pants

  • Pin the inner side of the pants
  • Also, pin about 10cm of the crotch
  • Sew the pinned part together
  • Now you have the main part of the onesie (Picture 2)

Step 14: Sew the Zipper

  • Now sew the zipper in the middle of the front

Step 15:

  • On a new piece of fabric draw out the shape of the pillow
  • Fold the fabric in half
  • Sew three sides of the pillow
  • Leave one side of the pillow open to fill cotton

Step 16: Fill the Pillow With Cotton

  • Turn the pillow inside out
  • Fill the pillow with cotton
  • Sew the last side of the pillow

Step 17: Sew the Snap Buttons to the Pillow

  • Sew four half snap buttons to the margin on the pillow
  • At the same position, sew the other half four snap buttons to the garment
  • Now you have a pillow that can be attached and detached to the onesie

Step 18: Create the Water Bottle Carrier

  • sew a piece of webbing strap perpendicular to the shoulder
  • make a circle with the second piece of webbing strap and sew it to the former pice and create a space for the base of the water bottle (Picture 2)
  • Repeat the same step to create another circle where fit the top of the water bottle (Picture 3)

Step 19: Create the Tissue Carrier

  • Use the same method of creating the pillow to create a pocket where the tissue can be places
  • On one side of the pocket, make an open cut for taking tissues out
  • Attach the pocket to the onesie with using snap buttons similar to how pillows are attached

Step 20: Sew a Pocket

  • Cut a fit size fabric
  • Sew three sides of the pocket to the onesie
  • Now you have a pocket as showing int he picture

Step 21: Conclusion

  • This is the final product of how the lazy would look like
  • Ideas for customizations and alternative materials:
    • For this project, you can switch the fabric according to your interests
    • For the add-on parts, you can create other things based on what you need
      • pockets for snacks
      • pockets for remotes
      • buttons to attach a blanket
      • butt flap
      • ...
