Introduction: Log Bird Bath
My Nan's birthday was coming up and she loves rustic style and old logs. She also wanted a bird bath for her new garden.
So i came up with this probably the most rustic build ever, i didn't even finish it as she wanted it to get weathered etc. Made only using hand tools.
This was made from solid ash logs and some dowels.
It took forever to drill the holes out so if you attempt this i would recommend some proper drill bits, i used a gouge for quite a lot of it!
I hope you enjoy!

Step 1: Layout & Guide Lines
I planned on using two small plastic dishes to hold the water, so the first step was to layout the shape of the dishes and started making come guide lines.
Step 2: Chisel
Next was onto chiseling out. This meant making guide lines and taking hogging out materiel with the chisel, taking a few mm each pass. I did this until the dish fit snugly.
Step 3: Clean Up
Then i cleaned up all the cut marks and smoothed out the bottom and sides.
Step 4: Dowel Support
To support the log in the middle i used some 12mm dowels. i used 4 dowels on the top and another 4 on the bottom.
I simply drilled out the holes for the dowels using a hand powered drill and a carving gouge.
Step 5: Glue Up & Job Done
To put together i used a lot of glue and a mallet to force the pieces together.
There it is, a very rustic bird bath, all made using hand tools.
It wont be to everyone's liking but it's defiantly a unique piece.
