Introduction: Makey Makey Interactive Story Using Scratch!

Instructions on How to make an interactive story on Scratch using Makey Makey and most importantly your imagination!

Step 1: Gather All the Supplies Needed.

Supplies needed include:

  • Makey Makey Kit
  • Computer (either a laptop or desktop will work)
  • A Scratch account
  • Glue or tape
  • Scissors
  • Paper
  • Tin foil
  • Finger Puppet template (we suggest one in the next step)

Step 2: Create Your Puppets

  • Hook up Makey Makey to your computer
  • Print out finger puppets, I'll post a link below to the ones we used, but you can use your own if you wish.

  • Cut out finger puppets and cut and glue/tape accordingly. (There are Directions within the link provided above, as well as a link to download the printable template for the puppets.)

Step 3: Make Your Puppets Conductive

  • The instructions that come with the puppets tell you to cut out small paper loops to put inside the puppet, but for this project, we will be making the loop out of tinfoil in order to have a conductive material for the Makey Makey.
  • After your puppets are cut out and assembled, insert the small tinfoil loop for your finger inside.

Step 4: Attach to the Makey Makey

Now you need to attach the puppets to the Makey Makey using the alligator clips provided in the kit. One end of the alligator clip must be attached to the tin foil ring inside the puppet, and the other side must be attached to the Makey Makey board in the proper place. If you plan on using the sample story we created, you will have to attach the wires in the following order:

Mouse = Right Arrow

Cat = Left Arrow

Rabbit = Up Arrow

Pig = Down Arrow

Step 5: Setting Up Scratch

So, if you don't already have a Scratch account, you may have to make one.

Once you're logged into Scratch, click here: to see the basic introduction story template we created for you. You can choose to play the story by maximizing the screen and then pressing the green flag icon. Once the introduction is complete you can start placing the finger puppets on your hand one at a time to be introduced to the different characters.

We only introduce the characters in our version, so you will have to write and animate a story of your own if you want the fun to continue. You can add characters, sounds and whatever else you please. Press the "See Inside" button to see our code, and add your own story.

Have fun!
