Introduction: Making a Minimalistic Skull Out of Cardboard

Making a Minimalistic cardboard skull sculpture.

Step 1: Creating the Layers

To create the layers i got a skull model and opened it in a 3D printing software where i sliced it to get the layers. I then took screenshots every couple of layers. I originally had 50 layer but as i was cutting out i realised that it was too many and ended up only using the 25 shown in the images. I put the layers into and A4 sheet and printed them out.

Step 2: Stick Onto Cardboard

I cut out each square and then I stuck the layers of the skull onto a large cardboard box using a glue stick. All of the cardboard with the layers stuck on was the same in depth. I only used 25 as previously stated.

Step 3: Cut Out the Layers

I then cut out the layers using a mixture of scissors and a crafting knife.

Step 4: Stacking the Layers Together

After all the layers were cut out, i started to stack them together to make sure they went together right. This is where i noticed that I had used to many layers and ended up only using 25 instead of 50 using every other layer. I have redone the layers in the first step to the ones i used.

Step 5: Glue Layers Together

Then using all purpose glue i stuck the layers together using the reference model to get the right shape.

Step 6: Finished Skull Sculpture

Great work! You should check out the program by Autodesk called “Slicer for Fusion 360” that will do the slicing/printing of patterns to paper for you. It actually lets you set your material thickness as well so you don’t get an abnormally stretched model as your finished product. I use it in my anatomy classes all the time for models like yours!

Very nice Instructables, dude! Congratulations, indeed!
It would be nice if you made the pdf with the layers available for printing purposes, so we could build our own copy of your skull. Think about it, please! I would like to make my own, for sure!

We’re you able to make two skulls? If you used “every other” piece, did the “other” pieces also make a skull?

Theoretically i could make two skulls but as soon as i realised that there were too many layers i stopped cutting out the rest and only focused on making the one. But yes if i cut out the rest of the layers i could make another one.
    Hope that answers your question
