Introduction: Homemade 'Mars Bars'

About: Everything I make is done with love and imperfection.

These mars bars are a staple for get togethers in my family. They are a totally delicious and decadent three layer dessert.

Anytime I have to make a dessert for a crowd I always go for this mars bar square.

Step 1: Ingredients

For this recipe you will need:

  • Flour
  • Sugar
  • Brown Sugar
  • Butter or Margarine
  • Sweetened Condensed Milk
  • Corn Syrup
  • Chocolate - Semi-Sweet or Dark

You'll need some measuring cups, a couple of bowls, a heavy pot, and a 9 by 13 inch baking pan.

Step 2: Bottom Layer: Shortbread

The ingredients and quantities for the bottom layer are:

  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 3/4 cup butter or margarine

Combine the above ingredients and cut with a knife or pastry cutter until it becomes crumbly.

Grease a 9 by 13 inch pan and press the shortbread layer into it firmly.

Bake at 350 F for 18 minutes or until it goes golden.

Cool.

Step 3: Middle Layer: Caramel

For the middle layer you will need:

  • 1 cup margarine or butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tin of sweetened condensed milk
  • 1/4 cup corn syrup

Combine the above and heat to a boil in a pot on the stove. Keep at a rolling boil for 5 minutes, stirring constantly.

Pour over the cooled base.

Set aside until cool.

Step 4: Top Layer: Chocolate

The topping requires:

  • 8 oz of semi-sweet or dark chocolate
  • 1 Tablespoon (or so) butter or margarine

Melt the chocolate and butter together. Chocolate can be tricky to melt so take care with this step.

I pour hot water into a bowl and set another bowl into the water being careful not to drip-if any water gets into the chocolate it will ruin. Stir and melt the chocolate in the centre bowl over the hot water. You can also use a double boiler if you have one - make sure not to actually boil the water while you are melting the chocolate!

Pour the chocolate mixture over top of the cooled caramel layer. Spread it out evenly with a spatula and then shake the whole pan really hard to make the chocolate topping smooth on top.

Let cool then cut into small squares to serve.
