Introduction: Newspaper Trick

About: Developing projects for HowToons @ Squid Labs.

Here is a really cool newspaper trick that takes a standard sheet of newspaper and makes into a cool sword looking thing.

Step 1: Prepare the Paper

Get two sheets of newspaper. Lay them next to each other and tape the seam.

Step 2: Roll Up the Paper

Roll up the entire sheet into a big tube and tape it so it holds.

Step 3: Cut

Now, cut slits in the end about 4 inches into the tube. Make them go all around the raduis of the tube. Refer to the picture for how to do it. TIm chose to use a machete and block of wood to make the process much faster. Scissors will work as well.

Step 4: Finish

Now, pull the end of the paper outwards. You can also whip the paper down, but that will only work if you rolled up the newspaper loosely. A big funny looking party decoration type thing is made. What you do with it is up to you...but I chose to model mine with my hat. Perhaps this will help me pillage a village.

Me too! I'm in Vancouver, and I can buy stuff, it's just that it costs money... I'm looking for something I can make with stuff I already have. Like newspaper. :P

PetervG, I am in canada too, you can order stuff, but it can be costly, try signing up at texas instruments for some free samples of their products. They will send you samples (up to 5 for most products, 10 ofr others) for free (fedex/tracking number included), Iave got 3 orders of free stuff worth well over $100 (not including shipping) :) If you have any more questions leave you're e-mail and I'll get a hold of you :)

looks like some Chinese/ Indian decoration. try using plastic foil (that's what we call that here in the Philippines, but otherwise i think it's also metallic paper or other materials that look like it) instead of newspaper- usually here it's gold, green, red, and blue. looks good during christmas, and if you invert the whole stack, trim the top, and add a base, you could make it look like a small, desktop-type christmas tree. hehe
