While looking up the butterfly projection of the world, I noticed that the flat edges would be easy to cut out with tabs and glue together as a 3D globe.

It's not the prettiest globe, but easy to make. Certainly truer to a three-dimensional world than the Mercator projection.

Step 1: Find a Butterfly Projection of the World

Search online. There are lots. Here is one I found on the xkcd forums.

Step 2: Print

Make sure to leave enough space around the edges of the page to cut tabs.

Step 3: Cut

Cut tabs as shown.

Step 4: Assemble

Use tacky glue to fold the tabs under and watch as your globe takes on round-ish dimensions!
