Step 1: Materials
1) Red, yellow, black, and white yarn
2) Size 10 or J crochet hook
3) Scissors
4) Yarn needle or embroidery needle with floss (black, white, and red)
Step 2: The Hat
First off, let's start with the main body of the hat:
The Hat
sc = Single Crochet
hdc = Half Double Crochet
st = stich(es)
dec = decreasing stitch
Rnd 1: Magic Ring with 4sc
Rnd 2: 2 hdc in each sc (8 st)
Rnd 3: 2 hdc in each sc (16 st)
Rnd4: (hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st) repeat around (24 st)
Rnd 5: (hdc in next 2 st, 2 hdc in next) repeat around (32 st)
Rnd 6: (hdc in next 3 st, 2 hdc in next st) repeat around (40 st)
Rnd 7: (hdc in next 4, 2 hdc in next st) repeat around (48 st)
Rnd 8: (hdc in next 5 st, 2 hdc in next st) repeat around (56 st)
Rnd 9: (hdc in next 6 st, 2 hdc in next st) repeat around (64 st)
Rnd 10: (hdc in next 31 st, 2 hdc in next st) repeat around (66 st)
Rnd 11-20: hdc in every st (66 st)
Step 3: The Ear Flaps
This step is completely optional. If you don't like ear flaps, continue on to step 4.
The Ear Flaps (x2)
Start with yellow yarn. Join into last layer of hat.
Row 1-3: (1 sc per st) repeat 11 times, chn 1, turn (11)
Row 4: (1 sc per st) x 3, 1 dec, (1 sc per st) x 2, 1 dec, (1 sc per st) x 2, chn 1, turn (9)
Row 5: (1 sc per st) x 2, 1 dec, (1 sc per st) x 1, 1 dec, (1 sc per st) x 2, chn 1, turn (7)
Row 6: (1 sc per st) x 1, 1 dec, (1 sc per st) x 1, 1 dec, (1 sc per st) x 1, chn 1, turn (5)
Row 7:1 dec, (1 sc per st) x 1, 1 dec, F.O. (3)
Count over 22 stiches on the last row of the hat and repeat.
Step 4: Border
This just adds an extra row of black onto the bottom. I think It completes the image of the hat better.
Border:
Start with black into last row of hat
Row 1: 1 hdc per st
Step 5: The Ears
I made 4 ear halves and joined two together for extra support, since I didn't want to use fiberfill in the hat. The double ear method gave the ears extra strength to stand up straight on their own.
The Ears (x4):
Start in yellow.
Row 1: Chn 9, turn (8)
Row 2-7: (1 sc per st) x 8 (8)
Row 8: (1 sc per st) x 3, 1 dec, (1 sc per st) x 3, chn 1, turn (7)
Row 9: (1 sc per st) x 2, 1 dec, (1 sc per st) x 3, chn 1, turn (6)
Row 10: (1 sc per st) x 2, 1 dec, (1 sc per st) x 2, chn 1, turn (5)
Switch to black.
Row 11: (1 sc per st) x 2, 1 dec, (1 sc per st) x 1, chn 1, turn (4)
Row 12: (1 sc per st) x 1, 1 dec, (1 sc per st) x 1, chn 1, turn (3)
Row 13: (1 sc per st) x 1, 1 dec, chn 1, turn (2)
Row 14: 1 dec, F.O. (1)
Use yellow yarn to join the two half ears together in the yellow section, then inverse the ear. Use black yarn to close remaining opening.
Using yellow yarn and either the crochet hook or the yarn needle, join the ears to the hat.
Step 6: The Face
The face contains several parts, all of which are joined to the main hat with either the yarn needle or embroidery floss in each part's respective color.
The Eyes (x2):
In Black
Row 1: Magic Ring with 8 sc (8)
Row 2: (2 sc in every st) repeat around (16)
Row 3: (1 sc, 2 sc in next st) repeat around, F.O. (24)
The Tint (x2):
In White
Row 1: Magic Ring with 8 sc (8)
Row 2: sc to first st of row 1 and F.O.
Join these to the black eye portion.
Nose:
In Black
Row 1: Chn 5, turn (5)
Row 2: (1 sc per st) x 4, chn 1, turn (4)
Row 3: (1 sc per st) x 1, 1 dec, (1 sc per st) x 1, chn 1, turn (3)
Row 4: (1 sc per st) x 1, 1 dec, chn 1, turn (2)
Row 5: 1 dec, F.O. (1)
The Cheek Circles (x2):
In Red
Row 1: Magic Ring with 8 sc (8)
Row 2: (2 sc in every st) repeat around (16)
Row 3: (1 sc, 2 sc in next st) repeat around, F.O. (24)

My 28 yo son loves the hat! He's been showing it off to his friends on the street and on line, there are some one line that want to know where to find the pattern so I guess I should be nice and tell them.

My son wanted a Pikachu hat and I am not a very good crocheter but this was so easy to follow and the hat turned out great. Thank you so much for these instructions. I would post a picture but he is wore it to school (actually slept with it last night)

Is there an estimated time on how long it takes?

Love this! What size head does it fit though? It looks like it might only fit a baby, and I'm 14, so I want it to fit! :D
Reply 10 years ago on Introduction
It fits normal adult head sizes. If you need to size it up, just add an extra increasing row after row 10
