My niece and I were trying to come up with a catchy name for these pizza crust wrapped sausages. "Borgias in a Blanket," "Mussoweenies," and "Donatellos" were a few of the ideas that came to mind, but ultimately just didn't seem to suit these yummy en·trée-sized creations. Best when served with a spicy marinara for dipping, they are perfect for when a run-of-the-mill pig in a blanket gets boring.

Ingredients:

  • 4 fresh Italian sausages
  • 1 store-bought thin pizza crust
  • 8 slices of provolone
  • Marinara sauce, for dipping

Step 1: Prep Dough

Start by cooking the sausage. It can be grilled, baked, fried, etc... For this Instructable the sausage was baked in a 350 degree Fahrenheit oven in a casserole will Italian beer for 60 minutes, turning once.

Once the sausage is cooked, pre-heat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

Roll out the pizza crust and divide into 4 equal pieces. They don't have to be perfect, as the ends will be trimmed later.

Step 2: Rolling, Rolling, Rolling...

Place two pieces of provolone on top of one of the crust pieces, at the end, as shown. Don't be afraid to be generous with the cheese, some will be lost out of the ends during baking.

Place a sausage on the cheese and starting with the closest side, roll up somewhat tightly. If the ends of the dough are sticking out past the sausage, trim them with a scraper or spatula.

Place on a silicone-lined baking sheet and repeat with remaining sausages.

Step 3: Bake and Serve

Bake the bundles in the oven for 15 minutes, or until golden brown.

Serve with marinara for dipping.

Enjoy!
